  • Just a little clarification,Im certainly not campaigning for Kucinich. But just because he says "me, me me" clearly while the others do it obliquely doesn't suggest he would make any better or worse a "leader".I was simply pointing out where being"correct" gets you in a Spectacular Debate.

  • Kucinich was the only one at the NPR sponsored debate today whose record of judgement has been accurate on these issues,Iraq WMDs,Irans capabilities, vote over Repub.Guard etc.. Of course he was asked the fewest questions.(maybe Gravel was tied) He is also the only one calling for impeachment of an administration which has so obviously lied about such important issues.

  • As long as easy credit remained available the "median" worker could only concentrate on his role as a consumer. When the credit dries up he will be looking for someone to lash out at, bankers, politicians, Jews? whoever is most convienent.

  • That is the saddest set of prescriptions for change Ive heard in awhile : better institutions and better leaders

Thats the wine and cheese protest for more overtime. The cardigan protest for softer stadium seats. What are all those "radical leftist" professors we hear so much about teaching this new generation? Malcolm Help Us!

  • The neo-liberal agenda is dead, a total failure in Latin America and if this fool doesn't recognize that he is blind. As for democracy promotion, look at USAID programs like NED and OTI. Used in Venezuela and Bolivia to support anti-democratic forces and subvert self-determination they are tools of the US corporatocracy. These CIA guys are lying thugs.

  • Daniel, perhaps you shouldn't comment after more than three martinis?
Anyway, Coulter is part of that new breed of entertainer who is paid to wear the short skirts, smirk and be "outrageous". Like Howard Stern, the advertisers know we thrive on the anticipation. The fact that she gets mentioned here is proof that the Spectacle is so deeply embedded it will take radical surgery to remove it.

  • As long as "liberalism" includes a belief in "free markets and the invisible hand" and governance fails to include deep, popular (rather than representative) democratic participation in economic decisions (production, allocation, investment, distribution), liberals will always be an ineffectual counter-vailing force to systemic injustice.

  • mm232 represents a large constituency of folks who have bought into large parts of the "dream" but fail to understand capitalism as the force exploiting workers on both sides of the border and effectively pitting them against one another to diffuse their energy.Understanding our class struggle is the same and that nationalism stands in the way of true solidarity is very difficult for blue collar folks immersed in capitalist cultural mythology.I would urge mm232 to think real hard about where the injustice and "oppression" originates.Think about how much democracy really exists.

  • Another frightening scenario includes an attack followed by massive US casualties in Iraq (all done purposefully) IN ORDER TO enrage the American public and give the administration carte blanche. Im no 9/11 truthout type but think about these guys! We have to allow them their "success" in Iraq so they may save face and we can avert certain catastrophe.

  • Not having read the book I don't know what kind of contradictions Pollitt struggles with but it is a good thing for all of us to face the inevitable tensions that arise living a bourgeois existence while caring about justice. Chris talks about the "modicum of comfort" and this is something brought up far to rarely that needs urgently to be discussed.Confession is a good thing and can lead to good changes. This doesn't preclude having fun (and dancing) but it requires a rare honesty.
