  • Huh. Well, don't know about you guys but I'm impressed. As far as public admissions of guilt from politicians goes, this one has the most class of any I've seen in a while.

  • No, article says "making him eligible for release in just six months".

  • You're right, it's a good question to ask McCain, but it's an easy one to knock down.

"If the man's paid his debt to society, then he should be returned to his wife and family," McCain said. "The fact that this man was found guilty thought a duly-appointed tribunal, and will be released after his prison sentence, should reassure the American people that our justice system is fair and sound."

And that's just off the top of my head, I'm sure a professional spin doctor could make it shinier.

  • Ach, I know. It just...you know it just kind of breaks my heart. That exchange there, you could see it as the culmination of a novel in which all people involved understand they are in a terrible system with illogical outcomes, yet all they can do is play their parts in it. They wish no ill will on each other, but everyone in the room knows that this man's life has been a window to Hell for no real fault of his own. And they are all powerless to truly do anything about it.

Or maybe not so much a novel. sigh.

  • I see what you're saying, but what a sad state of affairs where that could be considered "a huge victory". I think if I'd been detained under these circumstances, I don't think I'd be celebrating the fact that the conclusion is that I'm guilty and I only have to serve another six months.

  • Obama/Gore would be more likely, if nothing else because Gore doesn't seem to be into the presidency, and being VP would give him a freer hand to pursue his interests.

Kinda like how Bill Clinton said that there are some things in which he can have a greater positive influence than when he was President. If Hillary is elected, that'd put him in an interesting position, as well...

  • What makes you think we have the money for this war? If I have nothing in the bank, and what I owe is nearly as much as a year's salary, the fact that I can buy things with a credit card doesn't mean I have money to spend, really.
