Don't be so harsh
Atrios and others are taking too hard a line on Barack Obama's FISA stance. The key issue here is immunity. The Senator said he'd try to persuade the Senate to alter that provision. Furthermore, he said that as President he...more »

FISA
It's very unusual for any company to obtain immunity from liability before anyone knows what that firm has done. Yet rumors are that Congress is about to assure the telephone companies such immunity from allegedly illegal surveillance, while passing the...more »

Notice to Mainstream Media
Jason Furman is smart, principled, honest, and very well-informed. He also helped lead the idea-based and fact-based challenge to the completely disingenuous so-called reform of Social Security proposed by George Bush. Now that Jason is on the Obama economic team,...more »

Oil Bubble
Someone who should know told me the other day that the federal government should sell oil futures short, perhaps thereby driving prices down. The worst that could happen, he explained, is that prices would not fall, but would rise, and...more »

McCain and Goldwater
I'm holding a contest: in 100 words or less compare two Arizonans nominated for President: Goldwater and (presumably) McCain. Goldwater, as you can recall or look up, ran on the slogan "In your heart you know he's right." This was...more »

Why is Hillary
Why is the Hillary camp talking up the possibility of her being Obama's vice president. The admirable and talented Liz Caputo touted the prospect on cable two nights ago; voluble Terry McAuliffe did the same on Larry King last night....more »

The Real McCain (National Security Edition)
No one questions the amazing personal courage of John McCain during the Vietnam War. But when it comes to national security issues, and in particular strategic judgment, there is much to be quizzical about. His views on putting ground troops...more »

The Real McCain (Tech Version)
John McCain is setting a remarkable record: he is the major party Presidential nominee with the skimpiest policy platform since Warren Harding or perhaps Calvin Coolidge. He's making George Bush's year 2000 policy work look encyclopedic by comparison. Because it's...more »

speaking of harsh, btw, take a gander at this:
"Even if you never met him, you know this guy," Rove said, per Christianne Klein. "He's the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by."that's called, i think, projection. but also please note the dated references: country club, martini, snide. Also, as stated, the date is holding the martini, and the cigarette is standing. now that's a snide comment!

I'm not an employee of Blackstone or Intel. I am on the board of various companies. I do not speak here for anyone but myself. I support Obama. So does everyone in my family, and son Nate is a field organizer for him, now off to North Carolina.

Here's number two:
2. As to elected delegate counts: don't they matter? If yes, when did Obama obtain the lead and how long has he held it? Who won more in Texas? On what theory can we think that elected delegates don't reflect the will of the Democratic Parties of the different states?
And, no, folks, I have no axe to grind; Hillary would be a terrific President and all the folks mentioned would be great FCC chairs; Frontline didn't raise enough money and is irrelevant to this discussion; I just think it's time for a change in the Democratic Party and that Obama is the better choice; and, no, it's not easy for me to reach this conclusion given how much I admire, and how grateful I am to, the Clintons.

Here my comments to my question:
-- I said "related" and not "sole cause of"
-- How could such massive government spending not contribute to inflation, given the absence of any tax to fund the spending?
--How could such massive spending not represent a giant opportunity cost?
--If one of the strategic benefits of the invasion was to be a peaceful, capitalistic Iraq integrated with the West, then how could the failure to achieve that result not have an impact on (I didn't say "sole cause") oil prices, and thus inflation and reduced economic growth?
--Doesn't anyone think the Iraq situation negatively affects American ability to shape world trade and to open global markets for our exports?
--And how can another one or two or more billion dollars of spending on Iraq not exacerbate all of the above?Posted at March 1, 2008 6:17 PM in response to Question for John McCain

Wait a minute: I neither said a government agency should regulate speech, nor that Nader ought to be hated or stereotyped on racial, ethnic, religious, or gender-based grounds.

I'm trying to argue that all the mainstream media are paying Nader attention, without a basis for doing so, and therefore Obama needs to explain directly why Nader doesn't deserve a vote. The last two Democrats tried to ignore Nader, at their peril, and to their regret. Credit Roth in "Human Stain" for "labonza" usage.

I am completely grateful to Bill Clinton for nominating me to the FCC. I began talking often and working with Barack Obama when he was preparing to run for the United States Senate. I formed the view that he was destined for great things. More than a year ago, he asked me to support him in this quest and I agreed. I'm very sure he would not only be a fine President, but also that his election would be a moment of real change for our troubled nation.
