  • Yes, but it takes a seriously special tool to be so personally nasty to someone who went out of their way to help you out during your own primary election. I know, I know, Lieberman is virtually the platonic ideal of a tool . . . but still.

  • Working assumption: McCain has promised Lieberman some cozy, crazy position in his cabinet, like Sec. Def or State. That solves Lieberman's Senate problem (he'll quit before Harry Reid can fire him), and wouldn't you know, the governor of Connecticut is a Republican who will probably have the right to replace him with an interim R senator.

I'm still a little stunned that Nutmeggers could have been duped so well by Lieberman.

  • The problem is that the new hires weren't "improperly" hired -- it's that others were improperly excluded from consideration. Still, it's worth putting it in some perspective: A large percentage of DOJ attorneys stay for less than five years. Many of those who were hired are probably already gone, or never actually became permanent hires.

The more important step would be to reach out to those who were improperly excluded to see if they would still be interested, and placing them in appropriate positions.

Also, if we do get a Democratic administration, many true political types simply won't be able to stomach the change in policies and will self-select out of the agency.

  • Agree with this. The headline seriously distorts what was said.

  • Yes, exactly my thought too. It's a way of making sure he at least get equal billing to Obama, and that he does so without having to spend money.

  • Webb didn't stand a chance with the exurban and rural vote with Allen on the ticket. I don't know how he would do if he were up against someone less well-known or less of a cowboy.

Warner is adored in many of the traditional R places in Virginia because of his significant economic outreach there. Above all else, the guy is an entrepreneur.

Obama can win Virginia, just as Webb did, but it will take serious effort. Kerry actually came closer than I thought he would. Also, please don't forget, Virginia elected Doug Wilder first as lt. gov. and then gov. I will never forget listening to the swearing in and Justice Lewis Powell stating at the end, "This is a great day for Virginia."

  • I am sorry, but Clinton has a track record on economic issues and it's certainly not progressive. Oh sure, she appealed to working class voters, but the fact that they voted for her does not mean (and nor do I believe) that she has totally reinvented herself and what she believes in in the last 8 years. It certainly was not evidenced by anything she did in the Senate.

  • The reality is that we will always have to push on every issue, issue by issue, bill by bill, and rely on those in the Senate and House who have demonstrated willingness to be more progressive. I'm not surprised either, but considering that HRC was going to appoint Alan Greenspan as her "housing crisis tsar" on the dubious and somewhat irrational basis that he knew how to calm markets I doubt if she'd be any better. (AG calms markets because WS types know he'll take care of them above all else. How can I but not Hillary Clinton know that?)

  • I went over to this site a few times and I believe that it is a decoy site or whatever you want to call it, a way to rile Hillary's supporters up by making them believe that they are united against Obama, so that they either don't vote or vote for McCain. In other words, pro-Republican. I believe this because there are actually very few posters (I read an analysis -- under 300 a few of whom post 50 or more times a day). They do not permit ANY, even mildly pro-Obama posts, even in comparison to many clearly authentic pro-Hillary sites (e.g., Talk Left). It is therefore very closely policed -- not the usual hallmarks of an organically created fan site.
