  • My guess is that she truly believes Obama will be beaten by McCain and is giving it all she has to stop that.

So if she thought that Obama could beat McCain, you believe she'd suppress her own personal political ambitions and withdraw from the race for the good of the Democratic party?

  • a true Universal Health Care package?

Lovely idea, but it ain't gonna happen. A true Universal Health Care package would require the candidate to talk frankly about raising taxes, about single-payer, etc. It's the right solution, but it's political suicide.

There's a slim chance that Obama could be pressured into supporting some sort of fake "universal" health care package, based on mandates. I.e., "if you can't afford health insurance our solution is to force you to pay for it and garnish your wages if you don't." But I think he's smarter than to go for something like that.

  • The liberal contempt for the Bubba vote is no secret,

Hard to deny. As one well-known Democratic candidate put it in 1995 (as confirmed by four people at the meeting), when talking about working-class white Southerners:

    Screw 'em.

Who was it who said that (according to four people who were in the meeting)? Anyone remember?

  • I think Gore has a better shot at the Democratic nomination than Hillary. In the sort of brokered-convention scenarios that are Hillary's last gasp chance, the delegates would find it easier to converge on someone like Gore who could unify the party, rather than a divisive figure who endorsed the Republican opponent, who has favorability numbers hovering just above a fourteen-year low, and who ran such a poor campaign that she squandered all of her huge advantages to end up running second to a freshman Senator with "Hussein" for a middle name.

Posted at May 9, 2008 10:51 PM in response to Can Obama Survive this Ad?

  • If you would have said she DID run this ad, I would not have been surprised.

She's run her campaign badly, demonstrated her ability to come up with reasonable plans and contingency plans, and had a Bush-like tendency to let loyalty outweigh incompetence. But none of her ads (that I've seen) have been as thoroughly lame as this one.

On the other hand the depths of Penn's incompetence have yet to be fully explored. And she's been embracing GOP rhetoric and GOP positions more and more, so I suppose I could believe that she could start using GOP boilerplate "tax and spend" rhetoric against a Democratic opponent. It wouldn't be any stupider than making "experience" an issue and ending up looking foolish for inflating a photo-op in Bosnia into some sort of heroic war zone story.

And in general she's run such a completely incompetent campaign that she's squandered huge leads in name recognition, fundraising, and endorsements, to end up losing to a freshman Senator with "Hussein" for a middle name and a last name that rhymes with "Osama."

So I guess now that you mention it, if she ran this ad I wouldn't be all that surprised.

Posted at May 9, 2008 10:50 PM in response to Can Obama Survive this Ad?

  • If Obama were to pick Hillary, we'd see wall-to-wall ads with video clips of Obama's own running mate saying that Obama isn't ready to be commander-in-chief and endorsing his GOP opponent.

Obama isn't going to make that kind of mistake.
