I think Josh mentioned the Diaz book about a year ago on TPM. Fascinating. A more up-to-date and very detailed (a little too detailed for me) history of the Spanish invasion of Mexico is "Conquest" by Hugh Thomas.
Probably my favorite, non-academic, easy reading history is "The Fatal Shore" on the founding of Australia. Absolutely loved that book when I read it about 10 years ago.Posted at June 10, 2005 10:53 AM in response to More History Books

I was about to say, "What good legislation is passed now?" The few bills that do manage to get passed are either egregious giveaways to big corporations or pork-laden monstrosities. It's well past time for reform there.
