  • I think its a great topic to discuss. My thinking is to make him defend whats funny about lies that defame (is it funny when "some people" joke about Cindy's drug problems, or his inability to raise his arms?)

Anyhow, where is the line of decency in telling a joke, Sen McCain, because your jokes include killing Iranians, offering your wife;s bare body up for public consumption and gorilla rape.

So, I think its in limits to use his "jokes" as a discussion topic of where decency lies- thats how racist jokes became outcast, people decided even if they were funny to some, the hurt and dishonesty to the whole made the joke unappealing, and the humor defense unjustified. Telling these jokes are now more a sign of a personality flaw than a harm to the subject.

McCain made Obama backpedal on the dollar bill racism. I believe Obama has more firepower to make McCain answer to these slanderous "jokes" passed off as facts, to the point he should reject the Obama Nation book and its author.

  • Consider it your point missed. And given the amount of serious dialog about the post it seems I have missed its point. I have a (non ad hominem attack) point, and for clarity it is this: The support given for the argument of a flip flop is thin to me, so what am I missing if its not a snark post and play along thread? I read the logic of conditions and thought seriousness was in question.

  • Btw, by November HRC supporters will be the most focused on and pandered to voting segment of all identifiable voting groupings for this election and for many others. So in the process, if they feel they havent been given enough respect or effort I will most likely be baffled.

Note: Expecting people will vote for you isnt necessarily a sign of disrespect.Could he mean that he is confident he can show those voters how he will represent them the best?

  • I agree. Three words badly chosen. But these three words don't say grow up, IMO. Additionally, I believe its errant to say he hasnt given HRC supporters reasons to vote for him. He has, to current supporters, and those deciding, including undecided HRC-ers, and independents. When Bush won the primary in 2000, he didnt do too much pandering to McCain's followers. Its not a sign of disrespect, or arrogance, or entitlement (well, maybe W...). People will make their choice on thier terms in the end.

Finally, I think there is a grieving period here BHO is respecting. I think he should and will do more. I also think HRC should expect less.

  • Please dont muzzle. Though FISA is as intrusive as Bill Clinton's Echelon, it could go beyond that. But Im up in arms about the precedents, no one knows what they are collecting, if they are filtering only intenational, should we set a bad precedent and immunize persons before evidence is presented, should we encourage companies to break the law because "the law is what the government says it is." Plus the whole did our president commit a crime thign, that ol chestnut again. Obama, I am watching and I have the audacity to hope.

Posted at June 24, 2008 12:46 PM in response to Now I'm REALLY upset!

  • I am fed up thanks for asking. Twice as much coverage of her concession speech than his victory speech. Still obsessed over her. You are right, this is a non-issue. And its discussed irresponsibly, didnt I see an analysis on negative stories that matched with front rummer status for both candidates? And what is the reason to go here- did it cost her the election? Do any grown ups think she lost because the media was too hard on her? If that is the implication then say it, dont be passive aggressive, and if its not let the story die!

Last sad part of this, sexism is the true enemy here, and that and the women who suffer from it should be the real focus, not HRC. But its more important to rationalize her loss than champion a cause, and also help Dems win an election- rather than paralyzing her supporters on the legitimacy of the loss.

Posted at June 16, 2008 8:55 PM in response to Are you as fed up with TPM as I?

  • Thoughtful. I am reminded of the W jokes, and the intense scrutiny of candidates. Obama is a Muslim right? I dont believe the media swiftboated Hillary the way the right did Kerry in 04 and McCain in 00. A contact sport.. right Bill?

Unfair as in sexist? Yes. Unfair as in "we have a personal bias against her more than is justifiable by the facts, comparative coverage, her doing, her frontrunner status, more than any other person in America?" I dont think so. With HRC, they actually had real ammo (no not the sexist comments- that is where the true shame is IMO, but Bosnia, 3am, other nontruths, etc.), and some not (past scandals, which are as relevant as the public wants them to be, opponent focus or not. Rev Wright was not found by HRC)but used it- too often- irresponsibly. Its a bad thing, not a Hillary thing, but a press thing. Other candidates feel it too

Posted at June 16, 2008 8:45 PM in response to Was The Media Unfair To Hillary? Here's Our Rundown.

  • I would add that a super majority of voters isnt required in order for some of the voters to decide based on gender. And no one really knows what their impact was. For example, with her high negatives and campaign flaws, would she have garnered less women votes? Note that I believe many southern women didnt vote for her because she wasnt their kind of woman, holding the 51% in check.

I believe sexism and the backlash is relevant only to make the point that it works both ways, and I hope they balance out. I resent her using sexism to drum up votes (mainly because I think it was self serving), but the issue needs airtime, and like Jesse and Obama, we might need to see a victim to get awareness before we find the catalyst of change.

  • Count me in to fight sexism. The media would not have been able to get away with such comments of a person of color. Though I think the campaign wasnt successful for other reasons, I do believe it is important to stand up to this for any election or any part of life. Anyone spewing sexist garbage is on my list. Ferraro is on another list.
