Exposing "Expose Obama": Good Idea or Bad?
I just sent an e-mail to a guy named Bruce. He's apparently the macher behind Floyd Brown's grotesque website, "exposeobama.com." I'm guessing many of you are aware of the site; it's been getting some attention on HuffPo and elsewhere. Floyd...more »

A Small But Compelling Reason That This Primary Fight Has Been Good For Barack
I was just reading James Rubin's excellent WaPo Op-Ed about McCain's 2006 statements on Hamas, and this line jumped out at me: McCain, meanwhile, is guilty of hypocrisy. I am a supporter of Hillary Clinton and believe that she was...more »

To add one more thought to your excellent post, Steve:
The reason why Republican attack memes take root is because they are embraced by the activist base and are spread on the every level, including person-to-person. Every outlet, every voice saying "Obama is presumptuous!" "Gore is a liar!"
Right now, TPM has up a story about Obama's new "hothead" line of attack. The article asks, "Will it work?" And that right there is the difference b/t the left and the right right now. If this was a right-leaning website, they would already be pumping out articles reinforcing the message -- not questioning it. I like that we liberals are critical thinkers, but when you're at war, sometimes you have to fall in line.

You know I can tell the Obama campaign response is working? During the whole Swift-boat ugliness, I didn't hear the name "Corsi" once. Now, that schmuck--and his lunatic-fringe reputation--is the whole story. Which is a very good thing.

I understand this that this is a story of some consequence. But the ALL CAPS RED HEADLINE on the front page? Never seen that before on TPM. A little Drudge-y looking if you ask me...

"I'd *hate* anyone to judge my intelligence by the marks I got," I mean. Whoops. Feel free to judge my intelligence by that omission, though.

In defense of the old man, I think he actually is pretty smart. I remember reading somewhere that, going by IQ, he'd be one of the smartest presidents in modern times. IQ tests don't necessarily tell the whole story, I know, but then neither do grades. I'd anyone to judge my intelligence by the marks I got in middle school or high school or, to a lesser extent, college. Remember also that Kerry, who is by any rational standards way the hell smarter than Bush, got comparably middling grades while at Yale. I think that McCain is slowing down, has poor judgment, and shows no interest in the vast majority of domestic policy. But stupid? No-- it would be a mistake to underestimate him on that front.

Yeah, I guess the "picking your battles" sentiment is the one that resonates with me most. This isn't about ceding national security cred to the Republicans-- it's about not wasting political capital on a battle that as of the House vote today is most likely a lost cause. Huge political downsides, few apparent benefits outside of principled martyrdom. I don't mean to sound cynical, really I don't. But it's not politics without some measure of calculation. and if Obama actually can get the immunity amendment back in the bill, that would be a meaningful victory.

Well, acc'd to TPM this morning, the Obama site is up:
That's a pretty good start!
Perhaps it's worth buying up domain names similar to exposeobama.com or other "smear" sites (i.e. exposeobama.org, exposeobama.net, exposeobana.com, foxnews.edu, and maybe daniel pipes and debbie schlussel's sites for good measure) and linking them over to fightthesmears.com. Or maybe, since the Obama campaign has more money than God, they'll be able to pony up for that themselves...
