  • declaring war on the media like this may be far more significant than his VP choice. I didn't think it would happen in an all-out declaration like this, but it will be a very interesting ride from here on out.

  • I think at this point McCain has a "three albatross" problem: Bush, Iraq, and Palin. Good thing he has so many vacation homes - he'll need them after the bruising he gets on Nov 4.

  • I love it... it's the Palin bounce! Thanks, McCain!

  • I definitely agree. And it wasn't Obama who defined McCain - it was he himself who did it, with his own massive miscalculation and cynical attempt to manipulate voters with his VP choice. It all happened the day he named Palin his VP, and nothing Obama could have done could have defined his temperament any better. or I should say... worse. From now on it's McCain and the piranhas in the media tank - Obama just needs to wait it out till Election Day.

  • this has gone gaga over at DKos and one diary has been deleted already. I think its importance is not so much as a fact, but the mushrooming of the rumor about a candidate who is so tethered to the extreme right of the Republican party.

  • The difference here is that blacks are supporting Obama because he represents them as a constituency and is a progressive. Why are blacks by and large progressives? Easy answer: civil rights, nondiscrimination, anti-poverty legislation - it is in the best interests of the majority of blacks, who are an oppressed class, to vote for Obama, who is wielding a progressive agenda.

However, Palin is far more comparable to Clarence Thomas - she is pro-life, does not believe in evolution, is against abortion on the far right wing where abortion should not be performed even in cases of rape or threats to the life of the mother -- and is a member of Feminists for Life, an organization dedicated to discouraging women from abortion as an alternative. So she may be a woman, but she sure doesnt represent the views or the interests of a majority of women, who vote their own interest (Democrat) more than they vote for their own gender.

  • Gee, and I thought I was the only one who picked up on McCain's "dirty old man" vibe. In addition, any picture of McCain with Palin is going to be a dreary, nagging reminder of every single one of his 72 years. And every time that reminder is brought up, then his greatest weakness is exposed to his own constituency - whether he will survive if elected.

  • I don't think McCain could have done anything more effective to DISCOURAGE the PUMA vote. Palin is no Hillary, and it makes McCain look not only more old and out of touch, it sends a message to discouraged women voters who wanted Hillary that "any woman will do, even one who has no national experience of any kind whatsoever." It will also scare all those people who are already nervous about electing the oldest president ever, with a history of cancer, who is now raising the profile on having been tortured in prison, leaving him permanently, irrevocably disabled, who can't imagine having THAT VP take over for him. Ain't gonna happen. Not to mention the sexism in his own party. I hate to say this, because of how much I loathe Karl Rove, but they would have done better with Rove's pick - Mittens.
