An Open Letter to Dean Edley
Dear Dean Edley:Thank you for publishing your explanation regarding the "Torture Memos" written by Professor Yoo and the decision not to take any action against him. Your assumption that your explanation would not be totally satisfying to everyone was very...more »

It's beginning to look like Obama should have accepted McCain's plan for frequent debates or joint appearances at town hall meetings. McCain seems to be more and more addled as his campaign progresses. The pressure and unrelenting nature of a presidential campaign is sure to tire him further and make his speeches and sound bites even more garbled.

Actually, )PaulW, I think that the bar is much higher than that for Yoo. As a lawyer isn't he is required, when discussing possibly illegal actions, to provide a thorough discussion of the matter and present at a minimum the established interpretation of the laws? I believe that all of his writing merely strained to justify the course of action he knew that the leaders of our country were already determined to take. I am sure that he is required as a matter of professional ethics to clearly counsel his clients (which Cheney etal were in every sense of the word) that the course of action they were considering is illegal.

I'm sure DOJ will find that Yoo acted responsibly and professionally, just as the dean of Berkeley's law school determined that Yoo's work was covered by academic freedom, and that in any case he wasn't as guilty as Cheney and Rumsfeld would be for any inhumane treatment received by POW's, oops, of course I meant unlawful combatants.

This is one of the reasons I support Obama. Thoughtful comments, plain speaking. Also, pursuit of law breakers within the Bush administration would be a much more difficult task for HRC. The record of the GOP's aggressive and continuous assaults on her and her husband ("the vast right wing conspiracy") would make it look like any effort she made to address the lawlessness of the Bush administration was just payback.

Excuse me, but I think the phraseology in your post reveals the exact reason that those who are less well educated resent those who have had the benefit of a good education. You state:
"We have something they can't get. They can't even get it if they win the lottery. So instead of viewing us with awe and respect, they see us a being condescending."
What's up with that statement? Why wouldn't they be able to get a good education if they won the lottery? Are they just stupid (unlike clever you)? And why should a hard working individual look up to you or anyone else with "awe and respect" just because you have a college degree? A college degree doesn't make anyone special; it is what they do with their knowledge that counts.
