  • : I've been a Democratic participant and activist since 1948. My first big election thrill was Truman's win over Dewey. Currently, I am in GOTV and local activism. I've had most of the local Democratic Club offices and run their website. I keep looking for someone else to come along and take over.

  • marcnyc at 3:03 PM has the right word. We need Palin's 1040s and that would either clear this up or give us more grist for Palin grinding.

  • This is a somewhat tangential comment on MoveOn's administration.

For months I have been getting their e-mails for "crucial" actions late - often a week late. They seem to be the only messages that are delayed. I just got some on the 24 of July that were dated July 17. I've tried to call this to their attention on a number of occasions over what seems like a year but the result hasn't changed. I receive no answers. I've given up trying to get them to listen. Is someone listening?

Someone at MoveOn needs to look into the delays in getting their e-mails out. I don't know whether it is a problem with their website host or my high speed internet service (Comcast). Sometimes I put on my conspiracy hat and think it's intentional by someone in the system.

Does anyone else note the problems?

  • Thank you Bill Moyers and Rev. Wright for an interesting hour. Wright is very engaging and has some excellent insights to share. Further, his words in context make great sense. Clearly, Clinton is happy with the uninformed race-baiting from her campaign. Win at any cost, bitch!

I was appalled at the treatment led off by John King on CNN at 10 pm. He obviously intended to slam the Moyers' presentation from the start. It was almost as if he hadn't heard it in its entirety. He may not have as he was preparing his talking points for the show.

I believe that anyone who can attach any substantive criticism to Obama after hearing the whole Moyers Journal is intellectually dishonest. I suspect, also, that racism is a large part of their view.

I'm not sure at all that responsible news-reporting has a chance any more. It will take more than a flood of e-mails to change the attitude at CNN who seems to want to out-Fox FoxNews.

  • First, let me adjust my tinfoil hat.

I wonder if this nuclear weapons incident was an advance relocation of weapons hoping to take advantage of an opportunity to respond to an Iranian provocation. Such a provocation might have been touched off by the Israeli attack in Syria on September 6. I do think that the US was aware of the attack before it was launched. We may even have been the instigators. The whole point might have been to provoke an Iranian response.

I know this possibility doesn't match the later speculations that nuclear activities were going on in Syria. However, before the suggestion that the target was North Korean support of a Syrian nuclear facility, one of the suggestions was that the raid was to block Iranian weapons being shipped to Hezbollah.

I also know that there are probably other (and likely better) ways for weapons to be moved into a site of tactical readiness than to move them on the wings of a B-52.

But, like several others, I can only imagine the wild machinations that this bunch of leaders we have might initiate. I don't trust them one damned bit!

  •     One of Bush's boasts is that the cost is going down.  He is referring to the monthly premiums being lower than the $37 originally forecasted.

What has really happened is that the plans have lots of flexibility in drug prices and copayments.  You need to know whether the overall costs have gone down as a result of people picking the lower monthly premiums.

This is just another example of misleading the public.

As far as the implementation problems are concerned, remember two things.  First, these people assume that government is going to fail and then proceed to make that a self-fulfilling prophecy so they can say, "I told you so!"  Second, this bunch has shown itself to be totally incompetent at the simplest governmental management tasks.  It's no wonder that the kickoff was a total SNAFU.

  • Unfortunately for Kerry, his hunting clothes looked absolutely fresh off the rack.  Why didn't he borrow some from a local resident that made it look like Kerry really had used them?  Not a very wise move. . . .

  • Just a wee bit of trivia.

    L. Brent Bozell is William Buckley's brother-in-law.  He was (probably still is)  married to Buckley's sister.

  • The reason that Bob Woodward could succeed with Watergate was that he wasn't an 'establishment' reporter then.  He is an establishment pundit now and he pays the price for access - don't offend the object of your publicity.  It makes everything you write suspect.  He has been lost to real reporting for a long, long time.  He's beyond salvaging.  His ethics are no better than Judy Miller's.  His book, Plan of Attack, is a longer and more skillfully composed version of the 'love notes' Harriet Miers wrote to W.  He typifies what is wrong with the Mainstream Media!

I wonder what Katharine Graham would think of The Washington Post now after Ben Bradlee has neutered it?  And she wouldn't appreciate that Newsweek has gone off on tangents of religiosity led by Jon Meacham.

Thanks, Prairie Sage, for catching the John/James Dean error,  You wouldn't know that I actually went to my copy to make sure I had the right title.  <:-|

  • Remember, James Dean's 2004 book was titled Worse Than Watergate.  It was true then and even more true today.

You inquire whether there  are any Howard Bakers in the Republican Party today?  Not many come to mind.  James Baker has been stuffed in the breach before but he's primarily a fixer.

A question you might also ask is, "Are there any Howard Bakers in the Democratic Party?"  Some names suggest themselves but there are a lot which wouldn't make the first cut.
