So what if it's grandstanding?

More of the article can be found here. Far sketchier coverage from CNN is here.

And I have to wonder, with thousands of people's lives at risk, just how much our national pride is worth. How many lives would balance against Castro's right to gloat? One? Ten? A hundred? A thousand? If each doctor he sent saved one person, that would be over 1,500 people saved.

I'm feeling relatively helpless out here in California. I've sent money to the Red Crosss, to Second Harvest, and to support MoveOn's hurricaine housing program. I'm considering whether I could host a refugee in my home. Other than heading out there and offering to help (which would be a financial hardship, but potentially workable), there's little more that I can do.

Now we find out (though not easily through our own media) that there are 1,500+ doctors that are what? less than an hour away by plane? Ready and willing to help. All it would take is for the US of A to eat a little crow.

But instead, more people will die. It's small comfort that none of them are my loved ones. They easily could have been.

Bleah...

P.S. & OT: Hey! I finally managed to make something work in the WYSIWYG editor1

Welcome TPM Cafe!

I don't know quite what I'm going to do here, but I do like the idea in general, and look forward to a more active online reading experience.
