I think Henry was going to ask Novak a simple question:  "You mentioned 'Who's Who' in your column this week as a place where Valerie Plame's name could be found.  Is that where YOU found her name?"  Then Novak's attempt at misdirection would have been revealed on national television.  And he couldn't have deflected the question, since he had created the issue by mentioning it in his column.
