  • My Dad - and Dr. Wright

A version of this was up on DailyKos, and was well received. So I humbly submit it here, in hopes that it will help some people with open minds." If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you'll get along...more »

  • Yes. Yes, you are.
And so are your kids (regardless of age), your cat and/or dog, your goldfish, and your vacuum cleaner.

  • This has been debunked. Obama was in the meetings along with Bush administration officials, as well as Chuck Hagel, and stated clearly that the US spoke with one voice, and that voice was the Bush administration.
    Taheri is a liar.

  • Jade,
I agree with you 100%. I've seen Wright preach a lot in the 90's - and while I've heard a lot of the themes he touched on over the weekend, I've never heard that tone. I've been thinking the same thing all day - but I felt it was better left unsaid.
Wright is incredibly intelligent, and he is a student of cause and effect. He has to know how the press would treat him, and he did it anyway. It was self-sacrifice, and I applaud and thank him for doing it for the country.
    Thanks for writing this.

  • There's a big difference between Republicans in Texas and Republicans voting in PA. In PA, you have to change your registration to vote in the Democratic primary.
I think that there are a percentage of Repugs in PA who were motivated to change in order to honor 'Operation Chaos' - about 25% of the 140,000 or so that did it. But Obama's efficient ground operation registered 3/4 of those Republicans directly, and I think they are the ones who honestly don't want to vote for McCain in November.
Even if the proportion is greater, I think that worst case it's a wash.
Obama has never had this much time to campaign in a state before, with the exception of Iowa, and that worked out allright. And it looks like he has many more endorsements to roll out, a great deal more money to spend, and a Clinton campaign with not much new to say. He will target delegates first, then popular vote, and I think he will win.

Good catch, Gary. The more things like this, the better.

  • What a great discussion!
It is indeed a common belief in Black America the the gov't loosed AIDS on the black community, right or wrong. Dr. Wright probably hasn't helped this. I have defended him, and will continue to do so, because I know him to be a reaaly great man.(see my blog)
Many people think that the Kennedy assasination had government involvement. A great number of people believe that 9/11 was more than was represented in the MSM. I just read a book, "Nemesis", which made the case thatIt's just another Aristotle Onassis had Bobby Kennedy killed. Alot of people think that an American Presidential Election was stolen - by fraud. Is this that different?
It's just another reason for transparency in government.

  • Sassi,
If you've listened to the two speeches I've linked to in their entirety, and still feel that way, that's a fair response. I don't disagree that some of the things that Dr. Wright says are inflammatory - they are obviously intended to be. It is reasonable to be put off by them.
I would point out that millions of people sit in church every Sunday, and they can't even be convinced to act as a Christian. To think that Obama was fundamentally changed by anything that Wright said is a stretch. It's certainly not evident in anything he's said. After that, it's a matter of believing him. I don't see any evidence of Obama lying.
Please make sure that you make your decision on the merits - not on a vague feeling based on no evidence - except that he knows a person you disagree with.

  • Great post.

I have been in the midst of extreme mood swings. I wrote yesterday that I would support the Democratic nominee no matter what - and I would do it for the troops fighting in Iraq.
That would have been much harder to say today. I despair at the state of politics that allows things like Hillary said today to stand - and she said them in the offices of the paper that accused her and her husband of having Vince Foster killed, that paid for the troopers in Trooper-gate, that financed Paula Jones, Kathleen Willey, and Gennifer Flowers. You can't get much more hypocritical than that.
It helps to know that I am in the middle of something revolutionary. I have seen many things in my lifetime , and Obama's candidacy is one of the most incredible. Many people don't get it, including Hillary.
I would still vote for Hillary over McCain. I would do it for the soldiers in Iraq. Then I would leave the country.
It's good to be reminded that I won't have to call a real estate agent overseas this fall.

  • I'm a 50 year old white atheist. I do know the Reverend Dr. Jeremiah Wright. I had the occasion to record at least 50 of his sermons in the 90's. He is a fine man, with a 36 year record of helping people who had no where else to turn. Let me repeat that - helping people who had no where else to turn. And I can assure you that what he said in the numerous sermons which I saw him give was always, always, in the context of the Bible. In fact, if you listen to the next sentence after "God Damn America", he says "It's in the Bible!".
You know, the ridiculous nature of this entire conversation is that some people are considering not voting for this talented man - not for something that he said, or that he believes, but for the words of someone else entirely. Now, when I was growing up, my father was very fond of saying "God damn this" and "God damn that" - cars, televisions, dogs, refrigerators, trains (he was particularly irritated by trains that kept him sitting in traffic), But you know what? I have a dog, and a car, and a television, and certainly a refrigerator, and I love them all, and I even like trains.
My point here is that words only change your mind if you let them. That applies to both Dr. Wright and Senator Obama. I've listened to Obama talk, and I really can't see where the firebrand, incendiary, controversial Reverend influenced Obama. I do see where the intelligent, inquisitive, and kind Dr. Wright that I know influenced him.
Dr. Wright isn't running for president. Barack Obama is. I think it might be better to talk about what he thinks, rather that what Dr. Wright thinks.
I can't imagine what could make Dr. Wright say those awful things. Maybe it was the German Shepherds. Or the firehoses. Or the billy-clubs. Or maybe it was serving his country in the Marines, and then coming home to be spit on.

    Some people, huh? Go figure.

Before you condemn either of these men, may be you should listen to what they have to say. After that, you can make an informed decision. If you condemn them before listening, you are making an uninformed choice. No one should cast an uninformed vote. If you do, you might vote for an idiot.

Nah, couldn't happen in the greatest country in the world.
