That is precisely the point. This is the most pro-authority polling group anyone is likely to find. And they are being slowly lost.

Gifted children do not automatically turn out all right. The great enemy of gifted children is boredom. Once boredom hits, it becomes very difficult to get their attention back. And the programs that raise average test scores are almost tailor made for producing boredom. Bright children are as out of place in the average classroom as are slow children.

"Isn't that moronic?" No, I'm afraid not. Incompetent, yes. Venal, yes. Even corrupt, yes. But moronic implies a lack of intelligence. And that is not the problem here. There is plenty of intelligence very badly and often haphazardly applied.

It seems to me that people are undervaluing social practices. Reading is a social practice. Societies work a lot better if they do it. Science is a social practice with very high payoffs in terms of the capabilities of a society. If someone does not want to practice science as we understand it, that is all right (for them). They just should not be surprised when societies that do practice science pass them by.

No. I was there, and it appears to me that the South Vietnamese government had substantially more support than these guys. I was able to live in Vietnamese cities and browse the markets freely. From what I can make out, no American could do that in Iraq today and live.
