The real New Yorker problem
This appeared earlier truncated after the first paragraph. .................................................................. Chalk up another republican victory thanks to the New Yorker. Not the cover. That will only hurt Obama with a segment of, face it, ill educated voters who never had...more »

Scott Simon enters the fray
In a disappointing sequence NPR’s Scott Simon first attacked Obama by changing an Obama quote to make it attackable and then replied to his critics with a poorly reasoned letter which would fail a high school logic class. ...more »

The dire and hopeful Palestine alternatives
In this week's bitterlemons Yossi Alpher summarizes the prospects in a way which would probably be unacceptable to both MJ and his antagonists.. To comply with the TPM terms of use I excerpt below only his conclusion.. The Olmert government should modify...more »

It's the womens' vote that means HRC must be the Veept
Sadly, I accept that Obama won't do well against working class whites and that's the reason he needs Hillary on his ticket. But only indirectly. Not because she will make that much difference with that particular sector. Until I see polls that...more »

I voted for Obama and was delighted last night. But don't think there's any objective reason HRC should withdraw. For starters, she could still win. If she wins Oregon as well as Kentucky and West Virginia she'll be near enough to Obama...more »

According to Bishop Tutu , Mandela calls up Helene Saltzman every weekend and asks to be invited over for her special pancake breakfast. A nice image.

OK here's the entire thing
THEY ARE NOT LONG"
"They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate:
I think they have no portion in us after
We pass the gate.
They are not long, the days of wine and roses:
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for awhile, then closes
Within a dream."

It seems pretty standard for politicians to cater to a live audience by selecting that part of their
policy that will be most acceptable. As for
knowing all along he would then "clarify" his remarks later in other forums, when most of that original audience was no longer paying attention.,/blockquote>
team Obama would have known that that particular audience was not going to stop paying attention.
I think we should assume that Obama meant exactly what he said. And also means a lot of things that he didn't happen to say that day.
Personally my guess is that the logic of the West Bank Wall(or Belfast) would apply equally in Jerusalem and there would have to be physical separation. Maybe Obama doesn't know that. More likely he doesn't want to know that. At least until the second week of November.
Am I shocked by that? Let's see, it seems to me he's running for something isn't he? Like St. Augustine's "Oh lord make me pure, but not just yet".

b) This whole comment is OT. And I fell for it.
No. It's straight forward. You care. You're not frivolous. Obama needs your vote and that of people like you.
On election night(early morning) 2000 a friend phoned to "share with us" that she had voted for Nader. At a time when we were on the path to losing Florida by 200 votes. The rest as they say is history.
I'll stipulate that Obama is a disappointment. But not that he would be worse than McCain. I'm not even sure he'll be much worse , if at all, then the democratic presidents we've happened to elect from time to time:Clinton's Triangulation; Carter's pro life position:JFK and the Bay of Pigs. Obama will (if we're lucky) be much of a muchness. If we're unlucky he'll be an also ran.
Vote. "Early and often" as we used to say in Boston.

Marry the man today. Give him the girlish laughter. Marry the man today and change his ways
......................thereafter. Frank Loesser
There's a word for politicians who stick to their principles : loser. Or as Leo Durocher put it:
"nice guys finish last".If we elect Obama we can try to change his ways.......thereafter. If we allow McCain to be elected we can be sure we'll have a consistent president-one who consistently implements policies which we abhor.
Hold your nose , tankard, and vote.

Hating Muslims is as american as apple pie.
"no Irish need apply"; "the yellow peril"; Father Coughlin and his anti semitism; etc. It's another face of "american exceptionalism". The belief since Governor Bradford that we are a city on a hill and everyone else is inferior if not worse than that.
We truly do have many good qualities. As do the Germans, the French, the Andorrans, you name it.
One of our bad qualities is this unfounded belief that only we have good qualities. We're not going to change so Obama has to demean himself by wearing that flag pin.
