My Letter to Josh
Josh, Thank you for posting Theda Skocpol's letter on the front page. I've been watching the faux outrage unfold over the past few days, and I have to say, it is exactly the sort of thing that drives reasonable people...more »

Ah, not to one-up everybody, but:
Imagine seeing Ralph Stanley standing on the stage of the acoustically amazing Ryman Auditorium. No mic. Lit by a single spotlight, singing O Death. Still gives me chills just to remember it.
This is an amazing ad, and I hope the campaign continues in this vein. I love the fact that they have not written these people off; they just keep impressing me with their good judgement.

lisast -- when I first saw them together, all I could think was, "He looks like he's running with his daughter."
This is great! Thank you for putting all this together - it makes me feel 100% better. I've been sick these past couple of days thinking that the press would just swallow McCain's version of the truth as they have before and give this woman a pass. It is wonderful to see that I was wrong.
I guess they were counting on that accommodating press, but instead, they have unwittingly supplied the MSM with a shiny new toy to bat around for the next two months!

Yes, yes-- I think we do agree, I just get frustrated (like Tena) with the "careful" talk.
No one can question Biden's bona fides on women's' issues. But beyond that, the thought of Biden stepping into the presidency (and God forbid that should be necessary) gives me a feeling of confidence. On the other hand....
I am insulted by this choice. It as if McCain thinks any woman will do to turn my head and make me vote for him. Forget that she's anti choice. Forget that she wants to drill anywhere anytime, the environment be damned. Forget that she also may not know the difference between Shia and Sunni, given her total lack of foreign experience.

Would they have said to McCain "hey, you have to be careful in the debate" if he had been running against Hillary.
I understand your point, I really do, but I hate it when we're told we have to be careful for this or that reason: can't criticize McCain, he was a POW. Can't be mean, she's a woman - with a special needs child. We're not running for PTA here. And this election at this moment in history is too damn important.
If she wants the job, she should earn it.

Tena,
I was just talking to a friend who had seen a reporter interviewing Hutchinson about the pick, and after the interview as the Senator was walking away, remarked, "Well, that was a tepid endorsement."Do you think Hutchinson could have been passed over?

Personally, I don't think this woman was the choice before a few days ago. Something happened - either the houses gaffe, or the realization that the Obama/Biden ticket looked like a winner, or the panic that the Dems didn't divide and self destruct as they were sure we would -- I don't know. But I will never believe this woman was the first choice.
Just on the surface I see this as a move to placate evangelicals, and a cynical ploy to lure women. But the presidency is not a game, and there is nothing about this woman that says "gravitas."
