Yet another reason why gas tax holidays are DUMB
Suppose that Clinton and McCain are able to get a gas tax holiday passed for this summer. This despite the fact that1. Clinton can't name a single economist who thinks the tax holiday is a good idea,2. Pelosi said it...more »

After John McCain loses this election, he will be shunned by Republican senators because he abandoned his party's president too many times as a "maverick," he will be shunned by Democratic senators who find his campaign both offensive and dangerous, he will be shunned by reporters who see that the real McCain is not the "Straight Talk" McCain, he will be shunned by the conservative wing of his party because he precipitated the worst defeat for Republicans since Watergate, but he will be beloved by those deranged enough to think that their president is actively working against the country he presides over.
He will go pathetically into his long twilight, a man of no consequence.

Obama will be the only possible president today who can -- on inauguration day -- tell us that we are in for some really hard times AND give us the inspiration, the hope to face the hard times directly.
It reminds me of both Bush and Reagan. Bush told us that we needed to keep on shopping after 9/11, that we didn't need to sacrifice for our upcoming struggle against organized terrorism, that the tax cuts recently passed were necessary for the so-called war's success.
Reagan, who faced a situation probably worse than today's, took the economy down much too hard to stop inflation, and offered little (as I recall) in the way of hope. I remember being considered lucky in '84 that I was able to get a conventional 30-year mortgage at 13.5% interest with nearly 40% down.
Both walked only half the walk either neglecting action with words or words with action.

This probably means that McCain will be debating tonight, and is stringing us all along in order to maximize attention to his gracious decision to debate. Gone from the TM will be Palin's interview, campaign connections to Fannie/Freddy, etc.

Warning: may be harmful to your sensibilities.
God is the biggest killer of babies, not abortions.
Approximately half of fertilized eggs do not implant in the uterus and are flushed away (as trash by God?).
Of the remaining half that do implant, about half suffer miscarriages, most during the very early stages of pregnancy, and are flushed away (as trash by God?). Only one quarter of fertilized eggs are even subject to abortion.
I am told these fetuses are human beings granted both souls and original sin by God at the moment of fertilization. But God does not allow them even a second of life as independent, loving, thinking creatures. And they don't have any chance to mitigate their original sins.
Or maybe these flushed fetuses don't have souls and are not really people. How would I know? How would any of us know?

I believe Obama's pay as community organizer was something like $13,000. You can't get the big bucks without real responsibility. But you can without any accountability.

Jacob Freeze,
Let's see what you are implying. Obama is not first in his class but is elected (not selected) by his peers to be editor of the Law Review, the highest post one could get at Harvard Law School. Obama does manage to scrape by, graduating magna cum laude. Several classmates are impressed by his leadership. No classmate has said otherwise.
Meanwhile McCain is not first in his class but is selected by Navy brass to the to highest post attainable from the Naval Academy, a slot in Naval Aviation. McCain does manage to scrape by, graduating in the bottom two thirds of one percent in his class. Bottom two thirds of one percent!
So you're implying that Obama got his post because of lower standards, but you write nothing about the Admiral's son (and Admiral's grandson) and his post? *uckin* hypocrite.
Now let's see where these lower standards get us. Obama ends up teaching constitutional law at one of the nation's finest law schools, and is offered a tenured full professorship without even the usual academic interview after he loses an election. He is widely praised by student and fellow academician alike.
Meanwhile McCain goes on to crash three jets (much more than the average, Jacob) and then gets shot down in Vietnam after a mere twenty hours of combat time. (Helicopter pilot friends of mine from Vietnam have told me they did twenty combat hours sometimes in one day.)
Lower standards? Lower standards? LOWER STANDARDS?
It must be sad to have a brain frozen with confirmation bias, no access to the real world, and no way out.

I'm almost as old as McCain, and I love my iPhone too. There's no excuse for him being so illiterate. Except being stuck in the past, rewinding the Vietnam defeat over and over.

I sure do hope it's Schweitzer rather than the usual media suspects (Biden et alii).
No national politician knows the oil issue specifically and the energy problem in general better than Schweitzer. Some polls have gasoline the number 2 issue just behind the economy. Obama's plan to grow the economy involves energy infrastructure.
Obama has foreign relations judgment sewed up: No war to start with, a goal to get out, importance of Afghanistan, summary attacks against key Al-Qaeda personnel, etc.
A good fit.
