  • Allow me to repeat myself

A very interesting analysis of the recent tracking polls offers anyone hyperventilating over Obama's recent numbers and imagining a 2004 Kerry redux some comfort - Obama is doing better than Kerry with almost every demographic, and impressively so with up and coming demo...more »

  • Seniors for Obama

We know Obama has the "youth vote" thing going, and I suspect many Democrats think that seniors (particularly white seniors) are more inclined to support McCain and have written them off. I think that's a mistake - in just the past day,...more »

  • Republicans: For the War Before They Were Indifferent To It

Ah, the intellectual epicenter of the vast right-wing stupidity - I refer of course to the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal, whose lead editorial today (careful, it burns) castigates congressional Democrats for playing "games" with supplemental funding for...more »

  • To Fight, or Not to Fight?

And no, this has nothing to do with the Democratic primary, or even Amy Winehouse. A post on pacifism at James Wolcott's blog has me thinking - if Obama is our next president, where and when would American military intervention...more »

In the spirit of party unity and the AUDACITY OF HOPE, I officially give in: I voted for Hillary, but I support Obama now. What explains this change of heart? Pure, craven political expediency. I think Obama's go the 'mo,...more »

  • It would appear that the only effect this article will have on the campaign is to toss a big shiny ball of unhinged Clinton-hating aluminum foil out there for squacking Obamabots to peck at.

I will make a conjecture - if starlings could blog, I bet their entries would be full of all caps and bold text as well.

  • With the arcane and pedantic exception of pointing out that it really should be "whom" instead of "who," this ad is fantastic and just what Franken needs to be doing right now - make it about Coleman and his ties to Bush, and this one does it well.

  • Al Franken will not win or lose because of any ad Coleman runs or any remarks Coleman makes about him - he will win if there is a Democratic sweep and lots of Obama voters in MN make it to the polls on election day. If they don't, he will lose.

Posted at July 22, 2008 1:55 PM in response to Out on a limb: Jindal or Pallin

  • My two cents - Jindal looks like a kindergartner compared to McCain, and in turn makes McCain look 700 years old. Everyone chatters about a VP pick at first but when it's all said and done, people vote for the pres, not the VP, and Jindal is going to highlight McCain's age in ways even Dems could never do.

Also, if he's so smart, I'm thinking Jindal might not want this gig. Turning around right after he's elected governor and going on a national ticket will no doubt sour him with LA voters, who will rightly see it as a careerist politican saying "F you, I'm out of here," and if McCain loses, he goes back and says what, "Sorry, didn't mean it, I'm really committed to being governor"? No dice. Sounds like another very young and promising politican who unexpectedly won the governorship of his home state and had national aspirations, but wisely passed on them for several years to avoid looking like he considered his office a mere stepping stone (Bill Clinton, elected ogvernor of Ark in 1978).

  • The one thing conservatives who rail about global warming "alarmists" and recommend drill drill drill policies is this: there is a finite supply of fossil fuels, period. Ain't no way that is going to change, whether that means we only have 5, 50 or 500 years of oil left. Given that, why not invest in a huge and even expensive campaign to find a different way to produce energy, one that will outlast fossil fuels? The only answer conservatives give is it's "too expensive" and/or we don't have to worry about that, yet.

The only "arrogance" I see are conservatives who crap on people like Gore, who are at least trying to find solutions, while sticking to self-centered energy policies that blindly ignore the next generations. The world, and the future of the human race, is much bigger than you, your goddam SUV and your ridiculously overextended exurban lifestyle.

  • Next up on this issue - a potential veto by Bush of the Medicare bill. McCain issued a statement after the vote that he would have voted against the bill, if he, you know, ever bothered to vote. If Bush vetoes then McCain once again will have to decide whether to stand with the prez or flip-flop - either way, I hope Dems will keep pounding McCain as often as possible on Medicare.

  • Clinton says something completely random about Nelson Mandela at the Aspen Ideas Festival, which is taken and blown up on this blog into an enormous non-issue complete with bloviating analyses of everything he ever did or said as president, and HE is the one who "can't let it go, won't let it go"? Quit psychoanalyzing people you don't even know and weed your own garden, Dr. Freud.

  • I really didn't care one way or the other on this particular issue, to be honest - but I do care that Obama seems not to be able to make up his mind. Now (Friday) he is "backing off" his statement from Wednesday: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/06/AR2008060601590.html?hpid=topnews

Running a freshman senator with not much experience is hard enough - having him practically beg to be called "flip flopper" is even tougher. Don't get me wrong, Obama still has my vote, but I'm really starting to wonder whether naivete (on the candidates part, and on the part of his most ardent - and unpersuadable - supporters) is going to be a problem this fall.
