Alabama and Georgia are doing something very different than the other four states. Both Alabama and Georgia are submitting several times as many social security checks as they are registering voters. Alabama has increased registered voters by 117,000 but has requested more than a million voter verifications. Georgia has about 400,000 new registered voters and have requested about 1.9 million social security verifications. It may be a coincidence, but in both states the number of social security verifications requested are very close to the number of non-white registered voters in each state. Have previously registered voters been purged from the rolls because illegal social security verifications did not match?

CNN is simply echoing the Republican propaganda here. The issue is: Did Palin abuse the power of her office? She clearly did not like the results of the effort to use official complaints to get her brother-in-law fired in order to give her sister an advantage in the custody battle. These charges were aired and when he was not fired, Palin fired the former Alaska public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan. CNN repeats the Palin charges against the former brother-in-law which seems to make the issue the failings of the brother-in-law, not the firing of the public safety commissioner. In other words, CNN is focusing on points that the Republicans want people to look at so Palin can avoid being held accountable for abuse of office. CNN can no longer be trusted to report the news, they have joined FOX in the stable of Republican propaganda organs.

You know that Bill Clinton is no more a racist than George Wallace. Prior to being defeated by racists in 1958, Wallace was about as progressive on race as any Southern politician. But once he was beaten by the racist, he decided he had to join them if he was going to win. As a result, Wallace's name now means racist to most people. But in 1982 as he made his final run for Governor of Alabama, George Wallace made a heartfelt apology for his racist behavior and actually won the votes of most of Alabama's black voters.
Bill Clinton can best be described as progressive on race but he is far from being a racial egalitarian. And he did pander to the racist in the primary. His denials just are not believable. Given his current behavior I don't expect an apology until he is on his death bed. At this point I have more respect for George than Bill.

Gun voters are already cast in stone republican diehards, they cannot be moved by anything Democrats do or say. That said, I have yet to see a poll where people name the issues that they say are most important that puts guns anywhere near the top. The NRA has shot its wad and it is totally useless to spend any more time on the gun issue.

What do I think? I think you are a racist who is willing to accept the assignment of social positions based on skin color and wants to define racist as something besides someone who thinks it is legitimate to assign people to social and economic positions based on skin color. Sorry, you don't get to redefine yourself as a good guy.

This whole cone of silence scandal reminds me of the 1980 debate between Reagan and Carter. Everyone left the debate amazed at how much sharper Reagan was than he was expected to be. In fact the debate is widely credited with helping him overcome one of the major doubts the voters had about his intellectual abilities. Well it turns out he was able to do so well because the Republicans had stolen Carter's briefing notes and none other that George Will used those stolen notes to coach Reagan for the debate. Carter had a list of issues to work from and Reagan and Will had the list of issues as well as what Carter was planning to say about them. Now we have this half dead brain McCain coming off debates much better than expected because the "cone of silence" was a fraud. Everyone who has heard reports of how McCain did so much better than expected needs to know that they were lied to when they were told that the "cone of silence" was in place.

I think jaycal makes an important point here. McCain claims his military service qualifies him for being the chief executive of the United States Government. And General Clarke caught all kinds of blow back by point out the basic fact that McCain's military experience is rather lacking in filling the military roles that do require executive skills. Here we have his attempt to put together an organization, his campaign, and he fails miserably. And the judgment is from none other than the Republican establishment. They have in effect told McCain he does not know what he is doing and you had better let us put someone in there who knows what they are doing.
