  • Restating the obvious: Primaries are fluid and dynamic

Any honest analysis of the election takes into account that the candidates act and react as the situation changes. Primary elections are fluid and dynamic. As a Californian, I am certain that Senator Obama would have done much better...more »

  • Rev. Wright: Right?

The "God da*n America" sermon isn't quite the offense I thought at first.  When seeing 10 seconds of it on endless repeat, it is offensive.  When seeing this clip, it is well within theological and historical bounds.  This sermon is much more...more »

It is interesting that the candidate that most emulates the Bill Clinton '92 campaign style is not Hillary Clinton, but Barack Obama.  Directly confronting the uncomfortable realities of American racism, this was the '08 campaigns' Sistah Souljah moment.  Just as Bill...more »

  • Wright and the sea change in religion and politics

Here's a contrarian view on the flap over the comments by Barack Obama's minister.  Rev. Wright, in full fury, said, "God da*n America" in a fiery sermon.  All good Democrats ran scurrying for cover, including Senator Obama.  The Republican spin...more »

  • Even if there were no more casualties in Iraq from this day forward, the costs of a stretched budget and a strained military are immense.

  • You would think the Republican presidential candidate could come up with something better than "verb tenses."

It reminds me of the (justified) mockery of the parsing of what the meaning of "is" is.

Verb tenses are sometimes very, very important.

  • BBpdx--I was just thinking the same thing. The right wing is in quite the tizzy over this. It's funny, really. They're dusting off the "liberal media" stuff in response to a GOP press aide saying that the media was too soft during the run-up to war. I think they do it to convince themselves.

It's hard to process factual information when you're red-faced and angry. They don't want to face the truth. And so they scream.

  • Politicians are realists and the Clintons are not fools. Why continue the argument over FL and MI at this date? Even with the absolutely best case scenario, Senator Clinton will need over 70% of the super delegates to win the contest. It's just not realistic. So why fight? Because politics is also about returning favors.

Right now there are a number of powerful Democratic leaders from FL and MI that are not going to attend the convention. Not just pledged delegates, but super delegates as well. Senator Clinton may be making the rational choice to negotiate on their behalf in order to gather chits for her supporters.

This is about the only positive spin I can put on her actions.

Posted at April 13, 2008 5:10 PM in response to Obama and the "Third Rail"

  • Mike,

    I'll be easy on you...

I just logged in to make a similar point. I realized that this whole flap is silly as most political flaps are, and then I tried to figure out why it captures so much attention. I've come to the conclusion that this flap is another example of liberal wimpiness.

We liberals have been afraid to tell the truth about the world as we see it for two decades. If we state what we really believe, the mean Republicans and their media henchmen will belittle us. We're afraid to offend and lose elections. And so we hold back and use euphemisms. We triangulate. We misdirect. We do poll testing to phrase our views inoffensively. We live in fear and we govern ineffectively because we have tied our hands rhetorically.

Enter Obama saying the same damn thing every liberal has been thinking for the last twenty years. Hell yes, people are bitter. The Republicans hide behind wedge issues like guns and gays and then exploit the nation's treasury, heritage and environment. We NEED to be angry about these things and make sure we are heard. Are these even controversial statements from a liberal perspective?

It's time to stand up and proclaim the truth and not run away from it. People are longing for an honest debate from liberals. Obama offers it.
