  • The new ad is effective, in that it takes a slap back at McCain's celebrity meme. In a kind of, "No I'm not, YOU are!" way. It's good that Obama is seen to be defending himself- unlike Kerry. But I sure hope that he follows it up on the stump with Anonymous Liberal's explanation that McCain and Republicans think the average vote is too busy to pay attention to the real issues and too stupid to tell the difference. Isn't this the exact thing we who pay attention complain about every campaign season- voters being treated as not very bright pre-teens? Even the Media snottily sneers about the childish quality of debate in this country, tho they're responsible for most of it. It would be a great thing if Obama managed to shame the Media into a discussion of the childishness of McCain's accusations against Obama, and about the issues that we should all be considering instead. McCain can only win if he succeeds in side tracking the Media from the real issues and policies of both candidates.

  • It strikes me that promising a future possibility of a gov't bailout, and expecting that we therefore are unlikely to have to actually make good on the bailout is too akin to the scam that the Bushies ran on us with the AMUF- we authorize them to use force, and therefor they won't have to use force. My mother had a saying: if it looks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck.....
I don't know enough about the minutia of these deals, but I sure hope that smart folks like you are watching out for the inevitable hidden trap that will eliminate the risk/ losses that the cronies are liable for, increase their profits, and leave us taxpayers holding a sack of debts-while our kids go homeless and hungry.

  • Interesting article. Notice how they managed to quote McCain, McCain's campaign, Dana Perino, and Adm Mullen 6 or 7 times (all derogatory quotes), but included not one quote from Obama, his campaign, or other Obama friendly folks, under a headline of "Obama makes war gains"? He may be making "gains" but the Wapo doesn't seem to think it's necessary to back up that assertion with actual people who believe that. Crappy, lazy reporting, as usual- even when it's right!

  • This is the best, most thoughtful reader post ever! I particularly appreciate your point that we are continually the victims of the politics of fear. It seems to me that this reluctance on the part of Dems to be fully what we are, and to demand that our elected representatives act accordingly. But we allow ourselves to be calmed down and bought off with "now is not the time" everytime. Looking back at the last 30 years, I have to ask my fellow Dems "Howz that workin' for ya??" We allowed ourselves to be put off on prosecuting Nixon, minimum wage hikes, Universal Health Care, any number of things. We even got stuck with the Patriot Act Abortion and the AUMF because it was "not the right time" to oppose the President. And now it's "not the right time" to impeach the most blatantly criminal President in living memory. Half the crap that Bush has been able to pull off is directly due to the fact that it wasn't "the right time" to call Nixon, Reagan, Bush 1, and Clinton on their abuses of power, and they all got away with it. Damn it! We have a DUTY to our next generations not to leave these precedents and loopholes lying around waiting for the next fascist to come along and exploit them. Future generations must see that "in America, we don't put up with that shit" There comes a point when refusal to act becomes cowardice. That point was 2 years ago.
