Ms. Hirsi Ali goes to Washington
She will officially announce her destination tomorrow, but it appears Dutch parliamentarian Hirsi Ali is headed for the American Enterprise Institute. This haven of free speech and clear thinking is her best alternative to the quagmire of political correctness that's...more »

Hirsi Ali and the right to disobey someone else's religion
The so called cartoon war is not very funny, here in Europe. For the first time since returning from the US I feel the Atlantic distance. Some comments on this and other sites sound somewhat relaxed, to put it mildly....more »

Cartoons and democracy
"Using the likeness of a service member who has lost his arms and legs in war as the central theme of a cartoon was beyond tasteless'', general Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff wrote to The Washington...more »

That being settled
The vice president had a telephone interview this morning with Tony Snow of Fox News Radio. The prime reason for his availability was probably a desire to put his weight behind Alito. But while at it he clarified a previously...more »

O'Reilly beats Letterman at neither man's game
The blurring of the lines that existed between journalism and political activism is so generalized you sometimes forget there once was a difference. Millions of people eased into the habit of getting their news from non news sources and happily...more »

Press Baron
The 'Assassins' gate' discussion shows again the Iraq drama is way bigger than whatever media story. Even if it concerns the world's most monumental newspaper. But, given the semi-transparant way the Miller-episode at The Times is unfolding, one wonders why...more »

Judge Roberts: perfectly a-political?
Seventeen hours of Roberts-hearings in the Senate have conveyed the image of a perfect European judge. He had no inclination to make political statements, to put it mildly. He was confident about the ins and outs of the law and...more »

Risk Assessment
If The Netherlands had lived protected from the sea half a century ago like New Orleans last week, there would have been only half the need to free it from Wold War II. The Nazis could have occupied only the...more »

"Conservative apologist"... Slightly suprising comment since the position you defend is the one taken by the French Front National, Flemish Interest and the Dutch minister of Immigration who got rapped over the knuckles by almost the entire Dutch parliament last Tuesday. Reason? Because she could not see more than the text of the rules. No inkling of fairness and judiciousness. That's what the law is about as well. Not just goose & gander. Lying is lying.
