  • The Gas tax: Hillary vs Obama

There has been a lot talk about the recent gas tax holiday that Hillary (and McCain) have proposed. And Obama has called pandering. The media, helped by the Obama campaign, has gone along with this characterization of Hillary’s proposal...more »

My husband is a republican (the old northeast variety) and doesn't get that they are no longer that party. Fiscal conservatives? Ha! No evidence as far as I am concerned. But the perception continues.  He seriously thinks that McCain is different...more »

  • The Texas caucus and caucuses in general

Texas has both a primary and a caucus. In the primary voters come in and in 5-10 minutes  can usually cast their ballot. There is very little excuse in my mind for a voter to contend they do not have...more »

  • Boy if you guys think any of these are "sexy" women throwing themselves at Obama you haven't been getting out enough. Wow 4 whole white women in the ad. Is the guy gushing over Obama some dark way to say that Obama is going to steal your gay white lover too.

It is you guys who are pitiful. Even the music tells you the ad is tongue in cheek and it is clearly aimed at Obama's empty celebrity. And by the outrage here I'd say it hits home. It gives whites a way to reject Obama that isn't being racist. He is just a celebrity and we need someone with more gravitas to handle the problems the US will encounter.

  • And shall we hear you report it when these or similar energy company executives give to the DNC now that O-blah-blah has decided to give in on off shore oil drilling?

    I thought not.

And lest we forget it was the precious one that voted for the egregious Bush Cheny energy bill in the senate not McCain (or Hillary).

When push comes to shove the chosen one always caves.

  • The Obama campaign had multiple responses and excuses for this. I have only one question. It was on the schedule- why didn't Obama just go by himself- without his general/campaign aide?

You and the media may nit pick about whether this was technically a lie or just a misrepresentation. Most people just hear he didn't visit the troops.

Gee this reminds me of the accusations that Hillary was a racist when she said LBJ was instrumental in helping Martin Luther King achieve his goals. The Obama campaign was all over that and all the people heard was racist no matter what the explanations were. What goes around comes around.

And Josh is toatally off base with his idea that the Paris/Brittany/celebrity ad is ala Harold Ford. The point is that the most vacuous of the vacuous draws big crowds and media and it doesn't imbue them with substance. And Obama's 10 day visit to Europe and the middle east doesn't give him foreign policy experience.

  • The trouble is that Obama was always an blank slate where everyone just wrote their own agenda and then believed that he was reflecting them back.

I never bought it. I always asked please show me what he has done to merit your enthusiasm? Please show me where his rhetoric has made a difference? He has been a state senator for 8 years. How did he empower his constituents and make his district into a showcase for change? I didn't expect much just a little thing. There was nothing, nada, zilch. And the more you tried to find anything you noticed how everything he did was aimed at just one thing -running for office. Not actually accomplishing anything just running.

Obama will lose in November because 1) he barely won his base (and some would argue that if you count actual votes he did not even do that) and too many will jump ship or not vote 2) he will mobilize the repug base even if they don't particularly care for McCain if not because he is black then because he is too liberal 3) real independents cannot stomach his lack of actual accomplishments when compared to someone like McCain who has a reputation for being a maverick and 4) the Kool-aid drinkers (at least some of them ) are waking up and like someone said during the primary wow that was a great speech but now that its over I can't actually remember anything he said.

You are absolutely correct it was that huge enthusiasm that got him the nomination because some states have caucuses and that works there. I said it once before, in terms of attracting new waves of supporters Obama peaked back in Feb/Mar. Democrats will be analyzing this election for years to come and I look forward to all the pundits on election asking can the democrats ever win the presidency again.

  • The Kool-aid must be getting too strong. Now we swoon because Obama included us in the "new and improved" faith based initiative he has put forward. Forgetting of course that prior to this all government funded programs were secular (read atheist).

Posted at July 2, 2008 7:54 AM in response to Atheists Rejoice

  • Riiiight! and the $500,000,000 dollars that Obama proposes to "teach " faith based organizations how to apply for those federal funds is not a boondoggle? (in the same way his private/public housing developments in Chicago were a boondoggle for his friends). Get real. If faith based programs were going to solve our problems they would have done so by now having been around for 2000 years already. This is another warmed over repug idea that has failed and Obama has gotten behind.

  • As several have said we already have a democratic congress that "knows" how to compromise. They fold every time. And the "compromise" they get is always what Bush and the repugs want. That is why Obama is so dangerous. He starts out in the hole by telling them he will compromise.

Your list of things we agree on are all the same kind of platitudes that Obama espouses. We ALL want to grow the economy, educate our children, have healthcare, protect the environment- who cares. The devil is in the details- details Obama doesn't have or I those he has made clear I disagree with (ie social security is in trouble; we can get universal healthcare even if we don't make everyone join). Repugs want to grow the economy by giving tax breaks to corporations so they are nice enough to give us jobs, repugs want to educate our children by giving contracts to private schools (so what if not everyone can afford them at least illegals won't be getting a free education), repugs want to protect the environment except if it impacts on corporate profits and then not.

So contrary to what you believe I think that there are fundamental differences between repugs and democrats and we do NOT want the same things. Their way has been a dismal failure in all possible ways and I do not want a candidate that doesn't get that.

Posted at July 2, 2008 7:35 AM in response to Why did I support Obama?? Oh yeah, I remember...

  • So both bill and hillary gave their donations to obama and I heard Obama reciprocated but what about Michelle Obama? I guess she really doesn't support Unity. Just like me.

Hillary as VP? I used to think I would want that but no more. I hope he never offers so she doesn't have to turn him down. Since I think he is going down in flames (esp. without her) it means 2012 is hers.
