  • In addition to the films already mentioned, I'd add "Seven Days in May" and the wonderful BBC production of "Smiley's People."

  • I just wanted to add that the 1799 French invasion of Ireland referenced in my short review actually happened.

  • Although not "history," Thomas Flanagan's The Year of the French is perhaps the finest historical novel I've ever read.  It is powerful, lyrical, and gives great insight into Ireland at the end of the 18th century. The plot involves a French invasion of Ireland in 1799, hoping to start an uprising and pin down sizeable numbers of British troops away from the continent.  The characters, the beautiful prose, the recreation of place, and the unbearable tragedy of Irish history make this novel a great literary and historical experience.
