I've got to second da Cunha's Rebellion in the Backlands (Os Sertoes). To me, Brazil is endlessly fascinating, wonderful, and weird, and this book gives out big doses of all three. A tragic story from a side of Brazil most foreigners never hear about. And it's yet another instance of utopian politicians finding out the hard way that using the military as a 'civilizing' force has its limits, in case you don't get enough of that these days.
Also: Fernand Braudel: The Mediterranean World in the Age of Phillip II, and Marshall Hodgson: The Venture of Islam.
These and Thucydides were far and away the best non fiction books I read in college, for whatever it’s worth. Also, I read Moorish Spain on Josh Marshall’s recommendation, and it was very good, so thanks! Is there anything TPM can't do?
