  • Friday's Morning Joe, today!

Watching MSNBC's coverage of the Democratic National Convention, one thing becomes abundantly clear -- they have very little interest in actually discussing Barack Obama.Instead, it's all armchair psychology regarding the Clintons' motives, and uncritical Q&As with Rudy and Mitt. They've...more »

Ah, the "presumptuousness" of Barack Obama... Enough digital ink has been spilled regarding Dana Milbank's hit job this morning, so I won't waste your time going after it. But I will pose a question:Suppose a presidential candidate e-mailed his supporters...more »

This is getting pretty sad.I see now that the McCain campaign has adopted whining as their official campaign strategy -- specifically, whining over what they view as preferential treatment of Barack Obama by the media. As such, they've started a...more »

You may recall that yesterday John McCain kinda stepped in it when he said that we're down to pre-surge troop levels in Iraq. John Kerry and the Obama campaign jumped on him for that during a conference call, correctly noting...more »

Posted at May 23, 2008 2:25 PM in response to What is Hillary's "leverage"?

  • It's fortuitous that Nemazee came out with this ridiculous comment just as CNN floated this suspect report about "formal talks" between the Clinton and Obama campaigns. It exposes the real lack of leverage the Clinton campaign has at this point.

Obama is killing them in fundraising and organization, and already has a vast swath of the political machinery lined up behind him.

They have only one card that they can play -- the threat of acting as a spoiler. You can see it in Nemazee's ham-fisted attempt at blackmail: "Make Hillary the VP or we'll sit on the sidelines for the general."

This is an incredibly weak card to play. As noted, Obama already has most of what Nemazee and his ilk have to offer, so there's little reason to take the threat seriously.

Moreover, what do Clinton and her acolytes gain from playing the role of spoiler? If Obama loses, then they're going to (rightly) reap a large share of the blame. If he wins, then their transition to political irrelevance will be complete. It's lose-lose.

Nemazee's comments reveal either that they've reached a critical level of (to use David Paterson's term) "desperation," or that they prize loyalty to Clinton over loyalty to the party. Or both.

Neither is a desirable trait, and neither demonstrates that the Clinton camp is in a position of strength.

Posted at April 18, 2008 3:59 PM in response to No, Obama did not "flip off" Hillary

  • Actually, she did make the comparison on CNN this morning.

    http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0804/08/ltm.02.html

ROBERTS: Optics and relationships though are also very important in a political campaign, and the fact that he still remains on the payroll, though, in a diminished role and with free trade being such a sensitive topic in the state of Pennsylvania, could the fact that he is still attached to the campaign hurt you there on the 22nd?

CLINTON: Oh, I don't think so, because I think people want to know where I stand. And I find it kind of curious, you know, we took action, and I think it was appropriate. Contrast that to Senator Obama's campaign, where as far as I know, nothing was ever done when one of his top economic advisers representing the campaign, unlike Mr. Penn who is not representing the campaign. But Mr. Obama's representative told the Canadian government basically not to pay any attention to what Senator Obama was saying about NAFTA, and I haven't seen any action taken in that campaign.

  • To add to that, David Axelrod phoned into the program later on, and didn't mention the Clintons in connection to the passport breach.

Again, Joe Scarborough saying that he thinks the Obama campaign is going to play up this angle is hardly evidence that the Obama camp is doing so.
