  • Hillary Clinton's status as a better known celebrity (along with deep dynastic traditions in Latin American politics) was often cited as a reason for Hillary's success among Hispanics in the primaries. Not sure this ad is aimed at a cleverly chosen mark. And Obama's Spanish ads tend to focus on fact that his father was an immigrant. Not sure the suggestion that Obama is rich and out of touch is going to play either. Insulting, more than anything else.

  • Yes, celebrity is anathema for political success -- just ask JFK, Ronald Reagan, and Arnold.

  • Also, we will certainly lose unless he simultaneously stops being so "fabulosa" and curbs his campaigns tacit homophobia.

  • It may not be legal to feature troops like that, and in any event would be regarded as in questionable taste.

But I agree he should publicize. . . good for a mention in a town meeting or debate.

Posted at August 14, 2008 1:55 PM in response to Study: Troops Deployed Abroad Gave Six Times More To Obama Than To McCain

  • Obama should counter this with an ad just showing a group of his 65-and up year old supporters talking about why they support him and why they think McCain is a crappy candidate who insultingly suggests that only young star-struck people support Obama. In fact, a series of such ads.

And he could leaven it with humor; they could refer to themselves as "hot chicks."

"Hi, I'm John Smith, I'm 82 years old. I've never heard of Bono, but I support Barack Obama because he has a real plan for alternative energy and he will restore America's position in the world."

"Hi, I'm Mary Evans, I'm 76 years old. My husband still calls me a hot chick, but I support Barack Obama because he's honest about the problems we face, and he's going to provide health care for all Americans."

  • With apologies to my own inexplicably undertrafficked reader post, the DNC should do an ad saying something like (with appropriate grainy images):

"Which of the McCains' 8 houses does he sit in when he devises ways to portray Obama as living the 'grand' life?"

"... or do the thoughts come to him as he rides in his family plane, or when he sits with the Washington lobbyists who run his campaign?"

" . . . and why the childish ads about Brittany Spears and the whining about Barack Obama's popularity -- which McCain calls 'celebrity' -- from a politician who appeared in The Wedding Crashers and been on the Daily Show more than any other guest?"

"John McCain . . . 'maverick,'? or 'hypocrite'?"

  • I think Hillary's going to be great this week. I strongly prefer Obama as a candidate, and was deeply annoyed by some of her campaign's moves, but I think she is a policy-engaged patriot who cares about the country and knows what's at stake in November, and will go to the mat to help Obama get it done. I hope Obama's fans give her the unreserved cheers and thanks she deserves for doing this.
