  • He's the only one I can see with the strength needed to counter a McCain/Ridge ticket. I think that's who McCain will pick. I sure have fingers and now toes crossed. :) Here's a link to a story about his wife and life outside the Senate.

  • I'm hoping it will be Jim Webb. Strong military background, willing to fight and let Obama stay above the fray, would be a good "sparring" partner, could easily run the country if he had to, is Progressive and a Populist. IF he'll take it is still the question. FINGERS CROSSED.

  • I'm hoping that his VP pick will bring the fight to the republicans. I hope that it will be Jim Webb. He would be the perfect "sparring" partner and mouthpiece for Obama. He isn't afraid to say what needs to be said. He can go toe to toe with grandpa on the military issues, knows foreign policy and has the respect of the Republicans. A perfect choice, IF he'll take it. fingers crossed.

  • I just got Vincent Bugliosi's new book, The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder. In it he lays out the legal case against Bush for the murder of 4,090 Americans. By lying about the reasons for the war, he is liable for their deaths. I sent e-mails to both of my Senators about this but neither have replied although I requested replies. We'll see how gutless the Congress is. Bush shouldn't be able to go back to his ranch and live the high life when he's ruined the lives of millions.

The Senators are to change the "war powers" bill to stop any attack on Iran or Syria or anywhere else until he comes back to Congress for authorization. Whether that will stop him is an open question. He is the "Decision Maker" and he may decide to ignore it all and do as he pleases, damn the Constitutional Crisis.

I was a supporter of Israel until about ten years ago. Then I realized that Israel was becoming our 51st state. Our policies in the Middle East were becoming ones that placed the national interests of Israel over the interests of America. Reading things like this:

on Dec. 30, retired Gen. Oded Tira, who headed up all Israeli artillery units, burst into print with this admonition:

"As an American air strike in Iran is essential for our existence, we must help (Bush) pave the way by lobbying the Democratic Party (which is conducting itself foolishly) and U.S. newspaper editors. We need to do this in order to turn the Iranian issue to a bipartisan one and unrelated to the Iraq failure."

"Bush lacks the political power to attack Iran," writes Tira. Thus, Israel and its U.S. lobbying arm "must turn to Hillary Clinton and other potential presidential candidates in the Democratic Party so that they publicly support immediate action by Bush against Iran."

"The Americans must act," Tira concludes. "If they don't, we'll do it ourselves ... (and) we must immediately start preparing for an Iranian response to an attack."

According to UPI editor-at-large Arnaud De Borchgrave, Tira's line tracks the New Year's Day message of Likud superhawk "Bibi" Netanyahu, the former prime minister.

Said Netanyahu, Israel "must immediately launch an intense, international public relations front first and foremost on the U.S. The goal being to encourage President Bush to live up to specific pledges he would not allow Iran to arm itself with nuclear weapons. We must make clear to the (U.S.) government, the Congress and the American public that a nuclear Iran is a threat to the U.S. and the entire world, not only Israel."

Israel's war, says Bibi, must be sold as America's war.

We are thus forewarned. A propaganda campaign, using Israeli agents and their neocon auxiliaries and sympathizers, who stampeded us into war in Iraq, is being prepared to stampede us into war on Iran."

We shall not be stampeded if we are aware that we ARE BEING STAMPEDED INTO WAR BECAUSE OF ISRAELI PARANOIA.

THIS is what happens to countries who don't support Israel. From Norway's Aftenposten:

"USA threats after boycott support US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice threatened Norway with "serious political consequences" after Finance Minister and Socialist Left Party leader Kristin Halvorsen admitted to supporting a boycott of Israeli goods. The reaction was reportedly given to the Norwegian embassy in Washington DC, and it was made clear that the statements came from the top level of the US State Department, newspaper VG reports. VG claims that two classified reports promised a "tougher climate" between the USA and Norway if Halvorsen's remarks represented the foreign policy of the new red-green alliance of the Labor, Socialist Left and Center parties. Norway's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre, responded immediately with written explanations to both Israel and the USA, clarifying the government's stance, while Halvorsen distanced her party's policy from that of the government's.

     (Aftenposten English Web Desk/NTB)

It appears you either support Israel OR you lose your relationship with the US. I still say that we've made Israel our 51st state. Why not just say it?

    Matt,

I really find it creepy that you feel everyones career is in danger by just speaking out about Israel. I'm 61 and have never in my life had a discussion with anybody about Israel. Ever. It isn't a subject that people here in OH/MI talk about. Not out of fear, just lack of interest. I don't think people are even aware of the level of support Israel gets from the US. The Toledo Blade had an opinion piece written about the M/W article, and then a Rabbi or something wrote a blazing letter about anti-Semites. It's kind of bizarre to those of us who in our real lives don't care one way or the other about Israel. Whether it exists, or doesn't. Every night we get our DAILY newscast about the latest bloodshed in Israel, but I guess we've just become numb to it. The same as we did with Ireland. It just goes on and on and after a while, who cares? After reading all the posts on various websites I've come to the conclusion that AIPAC is alot more powerful than I had imagined and reading what you wrote about fearing for your career by just debating the subject, it seems to me that AIPAC is not only powerful but extremely dangerous. It's stopping the normal flow of give and take, debate, freedom of speech, by painting all those who disagree with Jews and the policy toward Israel as anti-Semites. And in danger. I, for one, find that extremely disturbing. We all should.

I was just reading about the new American Embassy they are building right now in the middle of the green zone. Over a hundred acres, self contained water and power, security. It will be as big as Vatican City, in the middle of a war zone. It will cost over a billion dollars. The luxury suites for our government officials will allow them to live large amid the squalor and misery the average Iraqi is subjected to daily. If they don't already hate us, wait until they look through the bars at the city of light, a new Taj Mahal, in the center of their city, strewn with garbage, bombs going off, kidnappings, murders, undrinkable water, gas lines, part-time electricity, filthy hospitals, and no security-for them.

This will be the biggest embassy on earth. It's no wonder we are building all those permanent bases, we'll need to protect our billion dollar investment. Maybe the Generals see the folly of this and are getting out ahead of it. What a horrific mess we're in. I see no light at the end of the tunnel, unless we have a citizens revolt to go along with the Generals.
