  • According to the Texas Sec. State website, the primary delegate split was 65-61 for Hillary. I don't know what MSNBC's numbers are.

  • How does that law work- what determines whether someone is a Republican for purposes of appointment? Voter registration? Surely that can be gamed pretty easily. Or does the appointee have to promise to vote R for majority leader?

  • IRV makes it a little simpler to vote in a multi-party race for a single office, and hence makes it easier for third party candidates to attract support. Wouldn't have to worry about that Nader crap. (Of course, GHWB also would have beaten Clinton- stick that in your alternate reality machine.)

  • Indeed, if the solvency date has been moved back significantly, I expect to see the report on November 8.

  • Cohen conflated algebra and arithmetic.  He said there's no need to learn algebra because we have computers and calculators.  Calculators don't do algebra- they do arithmetic.  If you can't translate a word problem or equation into a simple function you type into a calculator, they won't tell you a thing about algebra.  (Computers, on the other hand, can do algebra, but I suspect that if you know how to use Maple or Matlab you aren't failing algebra in the first place.)

  • Hmm, wasn't there some criticism of campaign contributions from China?  I can't remember since it was such a minor detail, almost no one mentioned it at the time.

  • The gifted kids aren't necessarily the easiest to teach.  They get pretty bored if they're forced to sit in class listening to stuff they already know and can cause trouble if their needs aren't addressed as well.  The idea of mainstreaming was meant to address that, where the gifted kids help teach the ones who have trouble learning.

  • Nah, the Google image stuff is nothing- as they say on their site, these images are often years old, and it's nothing that can't be seen by flying over in public airspace (at least in the case of private citizens- military installations are a separate matter).  The more concerning sort of information is financial, not just because of privacy, but because it can by itself be used to screw up your life.  Add to that the fact that companies don't really protect financial databases, and you should be worried.

  • As far as practical aspects, you could argue that Bush can use the NSA's current budget to do his snooping, whereas Clinton could never have implemented universal health care without Congressional budgeting authority.  However, two points- 1) In contrast to the split government under Clinton, Congress has been quite willing to give really large amounts of money to Bush- (or specifically, Rumsfeld-) controlled slush funds, so they have an awful lot of money to play with.  2) The Treasury is an executive branch, so if you really want to go all dictatorial, what's to stop the President from just ordering the Treasury to pay for whatever programs he wants, Congressional power of the purse be damned?  Let's say Dems capture both houses next fall, and to stop George's excellent Iraq adventure, they defund it (as has been suggested by some people).  I'd give better than even odds that Bush would say screw you, you're putting the troops and the country in danger, we're staying in Iraq, and we're still issuing checks to cover all the costs.

  • I heard Rove and Bush were in a meeting last week.  When Karl was leaving, he tripped on the carpet and bumped into George.  He apologized, saying, "Oh, pardon me, Mr. President... if you know what I mean..."
Thanks, I'll be here all week.
