  • Gotta say, I don't understand how suggesting that people unite around Obama can seem like Republican trolling.

I'm a lot more suspicious of the the people who loudly proclaim that they can't in good conscience vote for the man because of one issue or another.

  • I'm unhappy about FISA too but it's time to give this one a rest.

There's no way Obama can come out to the left of "San Francisco Values" Pelosi and the House leadership, especially under public pressure from the Netroots.

You want to be pissed? Be pissed at the House people who put together the latest compromise.

  • Tena, I've been reading your arguments with great interest but I do think you're missing the importance of the immunity argument.

To be sure, the government has the key responsibility to obey the 4th amendment and the President is the one we should pin the blame on for the wiretaps. Nonetheless, in this instance the government lacked the technical ability to implement its program without the active cooperation of the telecoms companies, in violation of various pieces of tcoms law.

Look, if Dubya and Al Gonzalez come up to you and say, "Go ahead, bury that guy alive, we've judged it's legal to do so, national security and all", should you be free of all responsibility for what happens next? Obviously telecommunications law is a lot more complex that this straw man example, but that's what corporate legal departments are for.

Qwest, at least, figured out the requested actions would be legal and accordingly refused. This is what we want to encourage, not mindless obedience to the executive branch.

  • I'm pretty pissed off about the FISA "compromise" myself but my anger is directed at Pelosi for agreeing to the damn thing. Why is everyone's anger focused on Obama?

Frankly, I don't know if Obama can oppose this now without being seriously damaged as being "far to the left of the Democratic Party". WTF is up with Nancy here, anyway? How about some new Congressional leadership after the elections?

  • Webb's precisely the sort of SD who does need to be given slack though.

His margin of victory in Virginia is just too slim for him to be able to piss off the block of Hillary supporters. It's just not worth it when the contest is already decided anyway.
