  • This is truly an excellent review and commentary; it is wise, well informed and helpful and it throws a lot of light on very difficult issues. It is excellent on its own merits, not because it is "pro" or "anti" anything. The fact that Daniel Levy is an Israeli, not an American should be noted. I hope this gets a wide reading in this country and in the rest of the world.

When discussing policy concerning Israel and the United States, the emphasis should first always be on whether what is proposed is wise, well informed and helpful or unwise, uninformed or harmful to the situation at hand.

The often knee-jerk tendency to characterize a proposal or a discussion as "pro-Israel" or "anti-Semitic" or "un-American" is not really helpful.

  • The Office of the Vice-President has issued "instructions" to roll out a campaign for war..."

Congress in the next few days will have to decide whether to initiate impeachment proceedings against Bush and Cheney.

Military officers take an oath to uphold the Constitution not to follow the Vice-Presidnet's instructions.

Either way things go during the next few days, possibly weeks, this country has already proven conclusively that Shock and Awe cannot build an empire and that there is no evidence of the intelligence and talent needed to run one.

    The key paragraph quoted above:

They [the source's institution] have "instructions" (yes, that was the word used) from the Office of the Vice-President to roll out a campaign for war with Iran in the week after Labor Day; it will be coordinated with the American Enterprise Institute, the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard, Commentary, Fox, and the usual suspects. It will be heavy sustained assault on the airwaves, designed to knock public sentiment into a position from which a war can be maintained. Evidently they don't think they'll ever get majority support for this--they want something like 35-40 percent support, which in their book is "plenty."

  • Back in January of 2006 Elizabeth Holtzman gave both the why and the how of impeachment of President George W. Bush. Perhaps many of our "experts" are too young to remember her role in the impeachment of President Nixon. Too bad; you missed a great moment in American history, kiddies! She got the Democratic election she was seeking in 2006, but we should be asking, "Who or what has gotten to Congressman John Conyers?"

  • Impeachment of both Bush and Cheney is long overdue. The inside the beltway Democratic "think tankers" would just like to proceed to an election in 2008 on "hope" and "business as usual". They should not be too surprised if there is no election in 2008.

There have been high crimes beyond enumeration. The Bush Admistration has been a ghastly, shameful disgrace.

The ethical sensitivities of the Congress have broken apart and the American people have become inured to scandal to the point where they don't expect any lawful action or common sense from their government.

  • Scooter Libby does not have to worry about paying the $250,000 fine; Cheney can have that paid for him without blinking. Very likely the decision by Bush to commute the prison term was also requested (read; ordered) by Cheney to keep Libby silent. The complexus of interests that have brought about 9/11, the war in Iraq and are seeking a war with Iran are very clearly known by serious students of this whole ghastly scenario and the American (MSM-main stream media) is owned by that complexus of interests and is its mouthpiece.

The three branches of our government have all been severely compromised, the Executive, the Legislative and the Judicial. The military has been badly misused and abused and the main stream media blesses it all.

So what is left? People who know and can see what is going on and can think a clear thought and write or speak a clear sentence can still do that. The millions upon millions of dollars raised for the candidates will be spent where and with what result? Politics as usual supporting corrupt and destructive myths has gotten us into this crisis; politics as usual will not get us out.

The brilliance and the genius that crafted our American form of government, the Constitution, still exists among all of those who truly understand its significance. From The World Book Encyclopedia, edition of 1954, in the article on CONSTITUTION: "A constitution is not a guarantee that democratic processes will continue. In many countries, dictators have come to power by legal means and have set aside the constitution. The strength of a consitution depends on the willingness and power of the people to support it."

  • From Andrew Bachevich's writings and from his life experiences we know he understands, far better than most, the nature of the complexities that have resulted in his son's death. Because he has been so articulate we feel we know him and his family to some degree. His son's death is tragic and poignant and he has written that the awareness and feelings of never ending tragedy and poignancy over the loss of sons, fathers, mothers, daughters, relatives and freinds are shared by thousands of other families in this country, in Iraq and in many other countries over the years where the United States has been at war with people who feel the same things we feel.

This world is our home and the human race is our family. Wars are deadly domestic violence in this our world home. Just as there is no winning in domestic violence, there is no winning in war that makes it all worth it or makes the pain go away or makes it easy to cope with debilitating injuries.

Andrew Becevich has been hard at work for years pointing out that militarism comes at a very high price and can itself lead to our self-destruction. This country has a very long way to go before it even begins to understand what he has been telling us.

Communication throughout the world is now instant. Our emphasis should be on finding ways to communicate with those who see things differently than we do and devising ways to cope with those differences rather than planning and devising ways to obliterate them.

Ben Bradlee is still on the masthead of The Washington Post:
BENJAMIN C. BRADLEE - At Large.

I think he will really enjoy the "hot shot editor" comment though. I am not sure what At Large means here; it may mean someone who has not yet been caught for doing whatever they have been doing!

  • Senator Mikulski nails it here:

Sen. Mikulski (D-MD): "This is a reckless plan - it is about saving the Bush presidency, not about saving Iraq."

Whether Bush is delusional or insane, he is incompetent. Given the broad spectrum of advice not to add troops, he says he is going to do it. He is a real and present danger to our country.

Just say "NO" and cut off the funds. Iraq will be far better off when we get our troops out of the mix there.
