  • Agree 1000%. Cutting off campaign contributions as protest for FISA sell out would be a classic Democrat self inflicted shotgun in the foot. Grow the F up, people. This is for the future of the country (and the planet). I'm sorry if it offends your delicate sensibilities but presidential candidates need to cover their asses sometimes in the short term to avoid getting kneecapped during an election. Obama will have an opportunity to redress the mess once he's in office via the courts because this legislation is apparently full of legal holes.

  • ACanuck:

I understand your concern about a humor section. It would probably be a tired train wreck of weak satire and half-assed fake news posts. Watching unfunny people trying to be funny can be a horrifying experience. Go to just about any stand up open mike night and you'll get a taste of the horror.

That said, open mike nights are where future good comics learn the job and find their voices. And if it takes sitting through 100 Carrot Tops to reach a Dave Chappelle, I think the pain is worth it. Let's face it, a majority of the serious posts on TPM pretty much suck but no one suggests that people stop trying to say something intelligent.

There are definitely some clever TPMers hanging around and if the forum gave them a chance to shine maybe it'd be worth all the crappy posts you'd have to wade through to find theirs.

  • I like this thread. The fact that there's no mention of you know, that person, really makes political speculation fun again. Recommended.

However, I kind of disagree with the thesis on these grounds: pre-Cheney did a VP ever really have that much influence on policy? I mean, so what if Hagel or Webb isn't super progressive. If Obama acts as the kind of leader most of us believe him to be he isn't going to sell out his core principles for some Republican position on any meaningful level. (That's so 90s, anyway.)

Obama has a sterling record as a progressive. When he compromises-- and compromise is necessary to govern effectively-- he doesn't do it cravenly. Often the real compromise he makes is simply in his rhetoric, not in his policy goals. He has a great ability to make his principles palatable to people beyond those of us who define ourselves as liberals or progressives without alienating us. Very few politicians can pull this off and it's what makes Obama a once in a lifetime candidate.

I think a more conservative VP will have some influence on an Obama administration, but I don't believe he or she will unduly influence it. And I expect Obama would employ that VP as an extension of his rhetoric, using their influence and credibility-- with the military or GOP-- to help achieve his core progressive policies.
