  • "liberal moral outrage over Obama's supposed pandering to the religious right"

The term "liberal" is often interpreted differently. I think the Faith Based Initiative will be seen far more favorably my people associated with mainline
(liberal/moderate) churches (not Evangelicals or religious right).

Many on the religious right are focused on two or three issues: abortion, homosexuals, and prayer in school.

The mainline churches usually allow ordination of women and some allow ordination of homosexuals. There has been considerable heated debates in some mainline churches over positions on homosexuality. Most do not believe in abortion, but do not usually focus on it. The focus is on feeding the poor and helping other needy people.

The main concern I have is the administrative overhead for ensuring the rules are followed.

  • I am over 50, white and professional. Ethics is a major issue for me. I stopped supporting the Clintons in the 1990s. I am amazed by the number of more liberal leaning people that accept lying because everyone does it.

Many women and men only hear a few news clips. The few second clips of Rev Wright, the false claims of Obama being a Muslim. They visit with there 70-80 yr old parents that still tend to think Obama is a Muslim.

In addition, many women have encountered discrimination throughout their life. Many of our parents discouraged college. As young girls, we did not have sports teams. I attended a college where young women were locked in the dorms at 10:00 pm, while the young men could be out all night. Most women became teachers or nurses.

The 50+ women remember very real discrimination; therefore, they are reacting somewhat from deep emotions rather than logic.

The Myers-Briggs / Keirsey Temperament Sorter statistics find 60% of women fall into the "Feeling" category. There is also a larger percent of women voters in the Democratic Party. I fall into the minority category of women "logical" thinkers. I often find it frustrating when people seem incapable of looking at facts. Facts tend to change depending on a person's perspective.

  • Except for the abortion issue, it does not seem logical for Christians to support Republicans. Making abortion illegal will be going back to the rich getting safe abortions, while the poor bleed to death from unsafe abortions. I think Bush probably opened a few eyes in many churches.

Iraq War 'Unjustifiable', says Bush's Church Head
by Ed Vulliamy in New York

President George Bush's own Methodist church has launched a scathing attack on his preparations for war against Iraq, saying they are 'without any justification according to the teachings of Christ'.

Jim Winkler, head of social policy for United Methodists, added that all attempts at a 'dialogue' between the President and his own church over the war had fallen on deaf ears at the White House.

  • Jerry would sing praises for Bush and McCain. Sadly throughout history people have done wrong things in the name of religion. Bush used religion to gain approval ratings. Bush ignored his own church's attempt to persuade him to stop the war. The United Methodist Church is not an evangelical church.

Obama and Clinton's congressional records demonstrates their attempts to help people according to the teachings of Christ. Obama's people skills are what this country needs to make many much needed changes Hillary does not have the needed people skills.

Methodist Bishops Repent Iraq War 'Complicity'

"In the face of the United States administration's rush toward military action based on misleading information, too many of us were silent," said a statement of conscience signed by more than half of the 164 retired and active United Methodist bishops worldwide.

President Bush is a member of the United Methodist Church, according to various published biographies. The White House did not return a request for comment on the bishops' statement.

This week's statement follows years of public opposition to the Iraq war by the church.

In May 2004, the Council of Bishops passed a resolution that "lamented the continued warfare" and asked the U.S. government to seek international help to rebuild Iraq. The church's women's division called for an end to the war in 2002. And in 2001, the church's head of social policy, Jim Winkler, said the push for war was "without any justification according to the teachings of Christ," according to a report by The (London) Observer.

"The only solution seems to be to stay the course. But if you're on the wrong course, you don't stay the course," Carder said. "At the heart of the Christian faith is the willingness to acknowledge mistakes."

  • Being a logical and often skeptical person, I often find it difficult to reconcile religion and logic. Yet, I do sometimes believe that God has a plan for people — a plan that may start when they are born — that gives them special gifts to be used at a "specific" time. I believe it is possible that the diverse and often difficult life lived by Obama has shaped him to be the person our country needs — at this "specific" time.

No one will ever be Jesus; however, Barack Obama has lived a life closer to being according to the message Jesus left us than most of us — Love Your Neighbor as Yourself. I am an educated professional white woman in her 50s, not a starry-eyed 20 year old.

I did not know anything about Obama before hearing his speech after winning Iowa. I had the same emotional response that others have described. I got cold chills, had tears running down my cheeks, and I wanted to get up and do something about the state of our country. I have never felt that way about any candidate running for any office. I am too young to remember John Kennedy's speeches. I did not follow politics enough to remember Regan's political views; however, he always came across to me as a fake.

I was greatly surprised at my reaction to Obama. Not being a person that makes decisions based on emotions, I started researching Obama's past. Before reading Caroline Kennedy's article, A President Like My Father, I had reached the same conclusion, "Most of us would prefer to base our voting decision on policy differences. However, the candidates’ goals are similar. They have all laid out detailed plans on everything from strengthening our middle class to investing in early childhood education. So qualities of leadership, character, and judgment play a larger role than usual."

I sent my 27-year-old son an email about attending Obama's visit to our city. My first line was, "Obama is a special gift from God." Even if I am wrong and Obama does not live-up to the "hope" he has generated, I do not think our country will be hurt due to his ability to build consensus. I do not see Obama making decisions based on ego. He has dedicated himself to public service for the past 20 years, rather than working for a high profile law firm.

This "old woman" (Posted by wyt) is ready for change — just as other older women are supporting Obama. I can understand older woman supporting Clinton because we lived through the non-support of women in the professional world; however, for some of us ethics are more important than sex or race. Older white women in Missouri were instrumental in Obama barely winning Missouri (Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Jean Carnahan (MO State Auditor), Jean Carnahan, former senator and first lady (MO). If they had more time, I think Obama would have done much better in Missouri. The white female Governors of Kansas (74% Obama) and Washington (68% Obama) helped Obama have substantial wins.

I wish that Obama's supporters would read about his Congressional record and the bills he has sponsored or supported; otherwise, they perpetuate the cult movement described by several journalist.

In the first two weeks of the 110th Congress, Senator Obama helped lead the Senate to pass the "Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act", a comprehensive ethics and lobbying reform bill, by a 96-2 vote. The President signed this landmark bill into law in September 2007.

    Bill Sponsorship & Co-sponsorship

Statistics: Hillary Clinton has sponsored 352 bills since Jan 22, 2001, of which 305 haven't made it out of committee (Extremely Poor) and 2 were successfully enacted (Average, relative to peers). Clinton has co-sponsored 1713 bills during the same time period (Average, relative to peers).

Statistics: Barack Obama has sponsored 129 bills since Jan 4, 2005, of which 120 haven't made it out of committee (Average) and 1 were successfully enacted (Average, relative to peers). Obama has co-sponsored 529 bills during the same time period (Average, relative to peers).

Compared to the amount of time in office, Obama has a higher success rate than Clinton. One of the major reasons I voted for Obama is the bill that was enacted, which is one of his campaign themes. Get the Lobbyist out of government.

Obama's speeches remind me of the sermons I hear in the United Methodist Church. God is calling you by name to go somewhere in this word to help one of God's needy children. A positive message for the good of the world — that Obama has lived for the past 20 plus years.

I will vote for Senator Clinton over a republican candidate, especially considering the potential supreme court nominations.

College students and women should know:
November 13 - Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), praised Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) and Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) for introducing "The Prevention Through Affordable Access Act", which would fix the affordable birth control crisis affecting college health clinics and safety-net providers and restore affordable birth control pricing for college students and low-income women. Richards also praised Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) for their leadership on this important health care issue.

Senator Obama said, “We must do more to help low-income women and college students access affordable contraceptive drugs. No woman should be turned away from university clinics and health centers because the cost of prescription drugs is out of reach. Access to contraceptives is essential to lowering the rate of unintended pregnancies in this country, and we need to make sure these drugs are affordable and accessible.
