  • It's a false economy in Alaska, what with the oil companies and rebates checks. It's really not like any other state in the Union.

  • What is your salary as governor of Alaska and what types of additional benefits do you receive (housing, health insurance, life insurance, etc...)? Do you think basic benefits such as paid sick leave and health insurance should be available to all working mothers?

  • Jane: Welcome to the club of the worried well. We are like dogs who have been beaten and we are waiting for the next blow. For me, the first strike was Bush stealing the 2000 election. The second was his getting re-elected under shady circumstances in Ohio. The third has been his Supreme Court appointments. We have been conditioned to expect the worst and it's really hard to believe the worst is not inevitable. Right (and I don't mean that in the partisan sense)no longer prevails in this country. So we are anxious and waiting for that open hand to come at us again.

Take a break for awhile. I did for about a month. Helps a lot. Rent some good long movies (I recommend There Will Be Blood--watched it last night), go for long walks, get out around people going about their everyday lives. Someone else said volunteer. I coach a Special Olympics soccer team and twice a week these wonderful people bring me back to earth.

And, now it's a gorgeous day here on the Chesapeake Bay. Hanna is gone and I'm going outside to pick up the debris.

  • Welcome to the party! Great post, really. You forgot that they hate you if you are a community organizer, like a member of the PTSA, a volunteer for Special Olympics, a fundraiser for local veterans benefits programs, a voter registration volunteer. You know, the stuff that small towns and big cities, and all of America relies on.

Jason, you are seeing the damage wrought by all three branches of government controlled by the Neocons. And the slim Democratic majority in Congress not been enough to overcome the Bush veto. I don't think the Republicans have earned the right to keep the White House for another 4-8 years. And they have the Supreme Court, at least for awhile.

I do wish, however, there were more Republicans like you. I wouldn't be as afraid of their control. So, I admire you for sticking with them. Good luck! Why don't you run for office??

  • Kenga and Mason, thanks for these ideas. Back to the garden I go for more tomatoes (the rain has slowed). Good idea on the basil. Anyone have any ideas for cucumbers (besides pickles)? Tons of those to deal with. I have dealt with my weekend freakout in the kitchen with the TV and radio OFF.

  • The greatest irony to me is that these "small town is the heart of America" folks are the most willing to fear monger and talk about the threat of terrorism, telling us "elitists" in cities on the East Coast, that actually WERE attacked on 9/11, that we are not patriots. Telling city dwellers on the West Coast, another set of targets, that they are the better Americans. It's really outrageous.

Posted at September 6, 2008 11:47 AM in response to McCain's Fighting Words

  • I think that's perhaps the most arrogant thing I have ever read on this site, and that's saying something. The Republican party has exploited 9/11 for its own purposes for 7 years. So Top Gun McCain is going to combat the philosophy that spawned it? And we should pick up our pompoms and cheer him on, dance to his music? Well, someone needs to tell him he's being flying his plane over the wrong country. Tsk yourself. What happened on 9/11 is intensely personal to many, as Bslev writes above. I am surprised by his reaction, but I understand what he's saying. I don't get you at all.
