An attack on Iran would have to be air strikes, right? And air strikes won't stop the nuclear program, or even slow it down. So yes this is a little like asking which is worse (five years ago): a world with Al Qaeda or an invasion and occupation of Iraq?

Your figures for female literacy rate are wrong. UNICEF puts it at 70% for 2000-2004. http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/iran_statistics.html

The "Iran Statistics Centre" (?) puts it at 61% and 22% respectively for urban and rural women in 1979.

Is Yglesias really expecting people to take this "6 - 4 = 2" to be a serious analysis? I kind of hoped he was joking.

I don't pay that much attention but even I know the really important issues are things like cross ownership within markets, and the number 35% vs 45%, for example. Not "six apples is more than four oranges."

Wow. I don't read USA Today but I did read this article and it is indeed awful. "Can you believe those welfare queens with their food stamps but they still have $4,000 cars? Can't they take the bus like other poor people?" Someone shoot me now please.

What's the Bush Admin supposed to say? They can't keep saying the terrorists are in their last throes or that the attacks are a sign of desperation. Better just to keep quiet and pretend like we're winning the WOT and distract everyone with Miers etc.
