  • Clinton Between The Lines

Hillary Clinton has made a habit during the course of this campaign of trivializing just about anything that gets in the way of her argument for the party's nomination.  Red state, small state, caucus state, moving oratory, even the passion...more »

  • "If John McCain wants to suggest that I don't have a George W. Bush mindset, then he's absolutely right. That's why I'm running against George W. Bush and John McCain."

Absolutely! This is an opportunity for Obama to agree with McCain that he does indeed have a 9/10 mindset -- if that means remaining faithful to the Constitution, being honest with the American people, and using diplomacy as a meaningful foreign policy device.

  • The blame really should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the Clintons for enabling fools like Gingrinch, Bush, and Frist for rising to postitions of power in the first place.

I have to disagree. I think it's time to realize that the blame lands squarely on us. We were the enablers of the Clintons.

We indulged our own opportunism when we defended Bill Clinton as he indulged his. We may have believed we were justified for any number of seemingly good reasons, but in so doing, we opened the door that George W. Bush waltzed through.

Until we take responsibility for our opportunism, we will continue to pay the price for everyone else's.

  • Greg, I think you're kind of missing the point here. Clinton's comment wasn't a "slight" in the usual tit-for-tat sense. The problem is that it landed somewhere between tone-deaf and bizarre. You can completely ignore the intent of the remark and still see that its effect damages her image as a competent candidate. And if she really was angling for the VP slot, it gives Obama all he needs to illustrate how she could be a damaging distraction to his campaign. I think the pundits are correct in sensing this as a pregnant moment.

  • So essentially Obama's asking us to lower our standard of living to accommodate theirs.

No. What he's saying is that the good citizens of Beverly Hills can't go around telling the good citizens of Bangladesh that if they don't tighten their belts, the world will end. It's a credibility issue that Gore, among others, has addressed consistently.

  • Three things need to be determined:

    1) Where were they getting their address/phone number database(s) (which had to have been correlated in order for them to do what they claim to be doing)?

    2) How were they determining gender and marriage status?

    3) Did the calls made in any way correlate to their claimed target demographic?
