  • I like the idea that MJ is responsible for race in the campaign! That's adorable. Somehow I don't think he called Hannity and Colmes read TPMCAFE and and then decided to play Rev. Wright on a loop. Nor do I think that Bill Clinton googled Rosenberg and then decided he should compare Obama's South Carolina victories to that other black candidate.

Come on people let's see if we can get responses to this posting above the top two rows of Andrew's snazzy little commenting pyramid.

The real question in MJ's post is what does it achieve for Obama to tell Jews to look past his race (as if acknowledging that being black makes him less friendly to Israel) and to pander to Jews in Florida and promise he will be with Israel no matter what?

He should talk to them and tell them he will protect Israel as a Jewish state for all 8 years of his presidency. He would leave all options on the table for defending Israel if Israel needs it but his primary objective would be to defend Israel through a negotiations process that leads to 2-states.

If the Jews of Florida can't handle that, then MJ is right....who needs them?

  • So other than the day of the Penn. primary she only raised $12 million?

  • Hillary lost because the Democratic Party's primary rules favored Obama.

And you have the gall to challenge someone else's political sophistacation?

That's like saying "well yeah, Tiger Woods was the tournament, but just because the rule favored good golfers.: If the rules had been different Obama would have run differently, and given how ineptly Clinton's campaign was run, you have to think it's a safe bet she would have lost anyway.

  • Again, pardon me for pointing this out, but the U.S. of the 1950s and 60s, as awful as it was for the African Americans, was not nearly as bad a "neighborhood" as the Middle East was, and still is. Segregation is a horrific crime, but is does not equal physical extermination. And when the threat is to one's existence, as was the case with Israel in 1948, it cannot be fought off by peaceful means.

I'm confused IAF. Legitimately confused. I'm not attacking you. I promise! Are you saying Israeli settlers in Hebron or Kibutzniks in the Galilee have it worse than American Blacks did in the 1950's?

  • This is a very thought-provoking piece!

There is one problem though. I think it misses a point. Or maybe it conflates a point. Or maybe it's Obama who conflates a point by always talking about the Civil Rights when he is supposed to be talking about Israel.

You'll all remember Tim Russert asking Obama how Jews can be confident that he will protect Israel since his church honored Farakahn. I'm not sure there's anything wrong with Obama reminding people that there's a history of American Jews and Blacks working together on a lot of issues here in the US.

You seem to be suggesting that the problem with waxing nostalgic about the Jewish-Black Civil Rights alliances is that Zionism has much more to do with Black Nationalism thank MLK. But Zionists and the Jews who were marching hand in hand with Blacks in the South are not necessarily the same people.

  • Meanwhile, I asked an anonymous senior adviser to Hillary whether she'd be taking on O'Reilly in some fashion.

How do you know he is an adviser to Hillary if he is anonymous?

  • It's true. It's certainly possible! And it really doesn't matter. Good for her. It's probably true. But Greg, the fact that the Hillary Camp is STILL saying it's true, doesn't make it any truer.
