  • This "I was tied up" thing is getting stale. He will never get over his being shot down, captured, and asked to stay over in Viet Nam; part of which we understand was at his request.

Our experience in WWII taught us that the bombing of civilians and cities did not shorten the war, and was inhumane. Why he prides himself in this I cannot say.

  • Sixty years ago as a picky young eater I was cautioned by my mother to "Think of the poor starving Chinamen". I don't recall how much thought I gave them at the time, but am discouraged to hear the same advice once again.

  • The one "Real Problem" that Repubs have strived to solve over the years is giving back more of their hard-earned money to the wealthy. They have been very successful at this. Tax cuts, big borrowing, and big spending should continue to be an economic winner, and will continue to be unless something happens like a big burp over in Asian markets. (heh)

  • "Your ignorance and cowardice on this is breathtaking."

If she went to read this first your post was categorized as "bitter" and "angry" and no doubt dismissed.

The Post wants middle of the road comment so as to attract readers from that cohort which they believe to be where their future income stream, such as it is, lies.

  • Insufficient data here. You need to describe how much extra one pays, at what income levels, representative tax rates, etc.

Merely calling the AMT unfair without data and examples also leaves my eyes dry.

  • Arthur,

First, we have one Senator out sick, and second we have one Senator who votes with the other party on the war. "Control of the Senate" without 60 clear votes is a will-o-the-wisp.

Also, figuring out Senate rules is a little like trying to learn the rules for cricket.

  • Given our ridiculous two party system, no politician would dare tell the American public that the party is over; e.g., that the Bush tax cuts must be rescinded and reversed at a minimum to set us on the road to solvency.

Also, too many sticks have been poked into too many eyes around the globe over the past six unhappy years.

  • If we can't win the White House after eight years of this evil, kleptomaniac Republic administration, it will be time to quit trying.

Nominating another Kerry won't help, though.

  • Although the Arabic language is difficult, it surely would have been better if more could have some familiarity with it. However, any dumb cluck could have learned the history of Mesopotamia, and with that knowledge would have chosen another country in which to experiment with democracy. There are lots of books out there about the Middle East and what went on right after WWI. Did these idiots read any of them? Did they think themselves larger and stronger versions of T.E. Lawrence?

  • On this bill:

    1) How can they write an ex-post facto bill to absolve previous instances of torture? Is this not prohibited by the Constitution?

    2) How can they exclude the courts from review?

    3) Is it true that it applies only to foreign nationals? I have seen this both claimed and denied.
