I am new to this. I haven't lived in the states for two years and I've missed a lot, but I have been reading TPM for years mostly because it didn't drive me crazy and linked to other sites...more »

  • PS It can also go a long way to explaining a 80 per cent approval rating. I would not want upset that apple cart especially if I had a family of seven.

  • This line of thinking makes me think that perhaps Mccain's team decided he did need a game change. It would be interesting to know when this decision was finalized- after the Gallup daily jumped to an eight point Obama lead?

  • Maybe we could call it the "sanity" card. McCains gang already owns the fear card. THat's waht this is all about insane fear.

  • Read this article by Naomi Klein from Harpers in 2004 http://harpers.org/archive/2004/09/0080197

In it she describes the real "postwar strategy" of the neocons.

  • I wouldn't expect,Limbaugh, Hannity etal to simply pack up their bags and go home. I would expect that that the first year of an Obama term is going to be incredibly difficult and that the corporate media will try to take him down or at least paralyze him.

I do think however that there is areal possibility for decided plurality in the presidetial election and a significant shift in congress. That would be tantamount to a landslide. If Obama can deliver in the first two years of his presidency and the American people kept engaged then yes I think things could change.
I don't think that simply a "clean" campaign will do it. There needs to proper disgust generated by the electorate.

If Obama could maintain his equanimity AND prosecute the most egregious offences of the last eight years AND end the war, then we could see some real change. I think this would extend through the entire culture.

  • Hey one- Mostly I agreed with you. Hillary was the most settled of the two. i only found a link to listen about fifteen or twenty minutes in. I thought it was mostly a waste of time and unlikely to change anyones mind. If you were really undecided and didn't know who either of the candidates were than may be you go to Hillary

I don't think that anything is really out of bounds- but some stuff like the Ayers thing is just stupid. As Obama said he was 8 years old. Ayers is an accepted member of his community, a teacher on the board of directors of what ever the organization was. The whole thing was twisted - Hillary talked as if his remarks about not doing enough was in RESPONSE to 9/11 but they had been made previously and just happened to be published on 9/11. i don't think he compares to the criminals in this admin - but thats just my opinion

  • It does make sense if you think that he was speaking hypothetically. It is simply bad phrasing.

What if he had put it this way
" If the the reverend Wright had not not retired,or at the least acknowledged that his remarks were offensive then i would have felt uncomfortable staying at the church. However the reverend did retire."

    Makes sense to me
