The Real Reasons ADL Joined The Bigots
I don't know why it should be a surprise that the Anti-Defamation League joined the rightist haters in opposing the mosque at Ground Zero.
The fact is that neither the ADL or its twin, the American Jewish Committee (the other old, established Jewish anti-discrimination organization) has been about opposing bigotry or even anti-Semitism for at least a decade.
They now are entirely about defending Israel -- or, at least their right-wing version of Israel. That is why you are infinitely more likely to hear Abe Foxman, head of the Anti-Defamation League, or David Harris, chief of the American Jewish Committee talk about Ahmadedinejad, the Goldstone report, the Turkish flotilla, or the "campaign to discredit Israel" than about hate crimes against Americans (which is what they used to be about).
Even anti-Semitism is of little interest to them -- unless it is connected to Israel. In fact, Harris and Foxman have redefined anti-Semitism as opposition to Israeli policies (the Gaza war, the blockade, the occupation) rather than contempt and hatred of Jews for for simply being Jews.
Check out this ad from the American Jewish Committee which is just neocon scaremongering on Iran or this recent statement by Abe Foxman denouncing Presbyterians for opposing Israeli policies on the West Bank.
And there is this -- the craziest of all. It's a video, an "Address to the Iranian People," by Malcolm Hoenlein, who is head of the Conference of Presidents of Jewish organizations, of which ADL and the AJC are members. In it, Hoenlein calls on the Iranian people to rise up and overthrow their oppressors. It's hilarious, especially since it comes from a guy whose constituent organizations are just dying to bomb the very Iranians who he addresses with such presumptuous and unctuous compassion.
So what does this have to do with the mosque in New York? Simple. These organizations, and especially their leaders, hate and fear Muslims or, to use their term, "radical Islam." It is not because they are instinctive bigots. It is that they believe that the more acceptance there is of Muslims here at home, the less reflexive hatred there will be for Muslims abroad. And that, in their view, reduces natural American sympathy for Israel.
David Harris of the AJC has made a specialty of trying to convince Americans that estimates of the number of Muslims in this country are grossly inflated. His purpose is to prevent Americans from speaking about American Muslims -- as Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama -- as if they are central to America. Better that they be seen as a fringe group that can be ignored. Why else would the AJC even bother trying to discredit demographic data on Muslims? What, other than paranoia and racial animus, would even cause Harris to commission such a study? I'll tell you: fear that if American politicians begin to understand that there are millions of Muslim Americans they will start representing their interests. Harris's worst fear is that America's religious make-up will one day be described accurately as "Christian, Jewish and...Muslim."
Another reason for coming out against the mosque is to build relations with the American far-right. American Jews voted overwhelmingly for Obama -- and will again -- but these organizational types have not liked him from day one. And now they hate him and not because he has weakened the alliance with Israel. These guys just know that, left to his own devices, he would adopt the policy of "honest broker." They sense that, or, more precisely, fear it. They don't have to worry about that with any of the Republican likely candidates, for whom Islamophobia is in their DNA.
Bottom line. The ADL, AJC, Conference of Presidents, and the other "mainsteam" organizations are no longer Jewish organizations, let alone civil rights organizations. They are entirely about defending any and all Israeli policies and, to buttress that goal, demonizing Muslims.
That is why opposition to the mosque is a natural. The only reason that the other organizations aren't (yet) out there with Foxman is that they have better PR sense. But, who knows, they may not want Foxman to be out there as the lone Jewish Crusader.
Here's the good news. Most Jews are liberals. Only a tiny minority are members of these organizations. And even fewer are Israel-firsters. That, in fact, is why Foxman, Harris and Hoenlein are so hysterical. Their base is gone.
The real Israel-firsters have AIPAC which, to its credit, does not pretend to have any interest in domestic issues. These other organizations have nothing. Why not go with Islamophobia? Like its historic twin, real anti-Semitism, , it has legs.

I think that it also may be nice to build a synagogue / Temple or Cathedral in Mecca, seeing that there is the Mosque of Omar, and the Mosque of El Aquza in Jerusalem. Seeing that Mohammad ascended to heaven in Jerusalem, and the 9/11 casualties ascended to heaven at Ground Zero.

Channel Newt Gingrich lately? The whole idea is to be as little like Saudi Arabia as possible, which one of the reasons we don't have Kings, and why those who got rid of Kings also gave us an amendment which allows us to practice whatever religion we wish--or none at all, as Roger Williams articulate a century and a half before. "Practice" implies a right to build a structure to practice in--where we want, and not where some political body tells us to build it or not to build it. f the government can't tell us, we can't tell each other, either. So, if someone is willing to sell this organization space to build, let them build. They have a right to remember the Muslims who died 9//11.

I wish you could have attended an event at our local Muslim Center on the Sunday following 9/11. The hosts of the event sent invitations to all the churches in our town asking the ministers/priests to announce the event from their pulpits on Sunday morning inviting whoever to attend that afternoon.
The Center had expected less than 100 people to show up. Five-hundred people showed up - black, white, yellow, brown, young, old, children...We stood in the blazing sun listening to local leaders of many social and political and ethnic groups give their views on 9/11.
The last speaker was the Muslim head of the Center. He closed his address saying that he had been an American for many years, but today as he looked out on the sea of different faces originating from all over the world he finally understood what it was to be an American.

It's funny how you *think* you are being clever, so clever that you would think that writing your post twice would make you appear twice as clever.
But seeing as to how your post is filled with non-sequiturs and makes absolutely no sense since there are no Jews in Mecca; no one would be attending your hypothetical synagogue, nor would there be a Rabbi to look after it. For whatever unintelligible reasons, you can think its "nice" to beat a dead horse and fantasize about it as you please. Meanwhile, the rest of us will look at you briefly with pity and disbelief ... but if you're hoping for empathy you're going to be disappointed. We have better things to do than to share in your fictional world of patent absurdity.
At least your initial post could be excused as juvenile and written off as foolishness. But the second time around seemed to confirm that you're not all there.

I visited some of the links and I was actually surprised to see that the front page of the ADL site was focused on anti-Semitic acts in the U.S. And it turns out the ADL takes a very compassionate view of the AZ immigration law (unlike the mosque issue).
Nonetheless, whenever I see Foxman on TV he's defending an Israeli policy. I guess mission creep and will be his legacy at the ADL.
It's a real shame too because there's a real need for the organization the ADL once was. After racist acts against Blacks, Jews suffer more than any other group in the U.S. from hate crimes.

FROM JIM LOBE, 07/30/10: …While I don’t always agree with J Street — in fact, I’ve been pretty disappointed with its conservatism — I have to commend its leadership for reacting so swiftly and strongly today to the ADL’s announcement. Its reaction is also worth quoting in full…
…The contrast between Foxman’s tribalism and J Street’s universalism, on this issue at least, could not be starker.
Incidentally, I highly recommend a video documentary about the ADL by Israeli film maker Yoav Shamir. What I can only understand as Foxman’s cynicism comes through quite clearly…

AJC Applauds Court Ruling on Arizona Immigration Law
July 28, 2010 – Washington – AJC praised today’s federal court decision blocking key provisions of Arizona’s new immigration law. The controversial measure is slated to go into effect on Thursday.
In her ruling, United States District Court Judge Susan Bolton temporarily blocked a requirement that Arizona police would check the immigration status of detainees they reasonably suspect of being in the country illegally, and also blocked the measure that would make it a crime for immigrants to be in the state illegally.
“We welcome the decision to block the measures that would have encouraged racial profiling, fear of police and further distrust in a community already wary of law enforcement,” said Richard Foltin, AJC’s Director of National and Legislative Affairs. “Ideally, the court will make this action permanent, as well as broaden its order to block enforcement of the Arizona law.”
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent implementation of the new law, S.B.1070. The lawsuit argues that the Arizona law unconstitutionally usurps the federal government’s power to establish and enforce immigration policy.
“Arizona’s law is bad policy, and highlights the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform at the national level,” said Foltin. “The time is long past due to create a system that effectively responds to our nation’s security and economic concerns, and ensures the humane and fair treatment of immigrants.”

As usual, Mr. Rosenberg maligns first and get the facts later. Only a bunch of bigots like the American Jewish Committee in Mr Rosenberg's eyes would applaud the injunction against Arizona's racial profiling law.

Bravo to ba14 for exposing the tawdry methods of Rosenberg. As did ba14, visit the AJC website and poke around. Here's what I found. They've stood strong against the racist Arizona immigration bill. They have a history of humanitarian assistance, including in Muslim places like Bosnia, Kosovo and Turkey. They have a fellow named Rabbi David Rosen, who's a leader on Jewish outreach to the Muslim world. And they have an impressive Arabic-language website focused on building bridges with the Arab world. Yeah, they also enthusiastically support Israel (and a two-state settlement) and worry about an Iranian nuke. Why shouldn't they? So do I. Rosenberg's hysterical diatribe is totally unfounded. By the way, more poking around on the Internet and -- guess what? -- Rosenberg once worked for AJC back in the 1980's. He didn't last long. Now I can understand why.

Your uniformed rant against MJ misses the point completely, Sog.
He does not object to supporting Israel. (Not that the dominant military power and sole nuclear state in the Mideast particularly needs outside "support," but there is not a problem with supporting it anyway).
The issue, RATHER, is support for Israel based on demagogical hypocrisy and disregard for the support of the US and AMERICAN values. Maybe you missed this classic bit of doublespeak from the ADL Animal Farm pigs, about how all animals are equal but some are "more equal" than others:

Statement On Islamic Community Center Near Ground Zero New York, NY, July 28, 2010 ...
"We regard freedom of religion as a cornerstone of the American democracy, and that freedom must include the right of all Americans – Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and other faiths – to build community centers and houses of worship...
Proponents of the Islamic Center may have every right to build at this site, and may even have chosen the site to send a positive message about Islam. The bigotry some have expressed in attacking them is unfair, and wrong. But ultimately this is not a question of rights, but a question of what is right. In our judgment, building an Islamic Center in the shadow of the World Trade Center will cause some victims more pain – unnecessarily – and that is not right."

Sorry, PTroub, there was no "uninformed rant" just because you say there was. I was responding to Rosenberg's obviusly misinformed comments about the AJC. If you disagree, please let me know where and why. If not, kindly keep your ad hominem attacks to yourself.

You do not sound "sorry" Sogno, but to the substance of your comment:
I am not sorry, but I am busy today. I trust MJ on this. I do not trust people who make one-sided statements backing groups or individuals MJ exposes and opposes. His track record over many months on this general subject is spectacular and very much what AMERICA needs to combat the horrific hijacking of our Mideast policy. If he messed up this particular time, then it is an exception. The ADL's own remarks, which I already quoted above, are damning enough for me. If you, however, want to put your corrections concerning some of MJ's other points into a balanced comment on MJ's main topic here of "Israel-firsters", and the tremendous damage they have been recklessly and maliciously wreaking upon America for many years, please do so.

Funny how you don't pay any attention to what the ADL said. Instead you immediately turn this into one more of your anti-Israel, anti-everyone who ever supports Israel rants. In fact the rational presented by the ADL is not unreasonable. There are those for whom this might cause pain. How high you rate that in your judgment depends on who you are. Of course, we can speculate that the ADL is lying about their reasons. But if we do that, why not speculate that someone else, say M.J. Rosenberg, is lying about his reasons as well.
I don't much care if they build the center or not. I don't like the dishonesty about saying this is at Ground Zero and I don't like misusing preservation laws. And so I think this is not a government issue. But to pretend that the center will do nothing but bring joy to everyone is nonsense.

You're right, matts2, that Mr. Rosenberg likes to lead rants against anti-Israel supporters. You're right also that the placement of this Islamic center will not bring joy to everyone.
On this one though, while hardly agreeing with Mr. Rosenberg's screed against the ADL and AJC, I myself have to question the wisdom or the necessity of the ADL inflaming an already ugly situation. I know that was not Abe Foxman's intent, but as the location of the mosque/community center does not directly implicate the rights of Jews, I have to question why the ADL chose to take a public position that it must have known would be mis-interpreted as anti-Islam bigotry. I would have advised Foxman to stay out of this particular controversy, or to limit the statement to just calling for a thorough investigation of the questions that have been raised about the Center's financing. It'as not clear to me that the NY Attorney General--and candidate for Governor-- who oversees charities and non-profits has conducted one.

Sounds to me like the ADL are the kind of people to build across the street from the community center so they could toss rocks and scream at it.
Good thing lower Manhattan is completely built up; as it is, they'll have to settle for renting an office floor with big windows so they can post mean signs.

I used to work with a young guy (this was in 2002-03) who was really into the ADL. I found this surprising because the ADL is primarily appealing to a different demographic, not the just out of college set. But I guess they have a "youth group" to use a term that shows my age. I think maybe he was active in the ADL because someone in his family was.
In spite of his being in the ADL, he was a steadfast opponent of Bush's wars and read a lot of the same blogs and websites that I did. The weird thing was that he saw no contradiction between the two.
I could never decide whether he was someone not to be trusted, or someone who was genuinely confused.
