Note to Sherrod: Kick the Tires of Vilsack's Offer of "Unique Opportunity"
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has backed up and apologized to the recently resigned/fired USDA Georgia Rural Development Director Shirley Sherrod.
And he's offered her a new job, in his words "a unique opportunity" -- the outlines of which have not yet been made public.
It would not be unreasonable to think that the job he has offered involves serving as a sort of USDA "Special Envoy" -- bridging misunderstandings, class differences, or race differences -- a sort of ombudsperson fixer -- among the USDA's constituents and within the Department.
If I was in the pickle that Vilsack was in, given that he probably still entertains visions of future political advancement, then I'd offer her some plum-sounding perch.
But note to Shirley Sherrod: KICK THE TIRES of the offer.
Call up any of the Special Envoys at the Department of State -- Farah Pandith who is a star performer for Hillary Clinton as the Secretary's Special Representative to Muslim Communities comes to mind -- and ask if they have a "budget" of their own. Almost uniformly, the nearly two dozen or so special envoys with unique tasks don't have funds to do anything with. They have jobs, and they have some staff -- but they have zero funds of their own to go out and seed programs. They must beg, borrow and steal from other parts of government for their budgets.
So any time one sees "unique opportunity" as a qualifier before a government job -- particularly when it is being offered to give the perpetrator of a wrong, in this case Secretary Vilsack, a way out of political hell -- then demand "your own budget."
Otherwise, the exploitation that began with Shirley Sherrod's inappropriate firing will continue with Shirley Sherrod being hired back -- all to the benefit of risk-averse and opportunistic pols.
Here is Vilsack's statement and apology:
"Today, I reached out to Shirley Sherrod to apologize. I also told her I was sorry for the pain this caused her and her family and friends."I reacted too quickly. I should have taken the time to listen and learn.
"While I cannot change what happened, I can try to make something out of this difficult incident.
"As we know, Shirley has a unique and compelling story to tell. She and her family endured discrimination and overcame adversity. Fighting to advance justice and equality, she has helped farmers who were struggling to keep their land, fought for women in need of social and economic justice, and African-American men and women who faced discrimination. As USDA's Georgia State Rural Development Director, she worked to promote economic opportunity for all people by enabling job creation and business growth. And Shirley has shown tremendous character through the events of the last few days.
"Shirley and I talked about a unique opportunity at USDA. With all that she has seen, endured and accomplished, it would be invaluable to have her experience, commitment and record of service at USDA. I hope she considers staying with the department.
"I did not handle this situation well. I will continue to review the circumstances that brought us to this day and I am committed to making sure it does not happen again.
"As part of this effort, I also want to renew my firm commitment to put behind all of us the USDA's past record on civil rights. While we have made some progress over the last 18 months, more work is needed."

There are two threads to this story:
Shirley driving down the street, her cell rings and it her boss who takes his orders from the President.
Then there is a woman who goes to work and really is trying to make a difference in working Americans lives.
There is a disconnect somewhere, just like the one that told Eric Holder that the New Black Panthers where cool standing in front of a election headquarters with a night stick and SS uniforms.
Who the hell is giving the orders to put that foot in your mouth and swallow it until you chock? Then pull it out and say, 'Bush made me do it'!

She should say "no" very nicely and then go out and crusade against the FOX/Breitbart mentality and the pussified kind of politicians who would cave into a smear like they did on her before even viewing the tape themselves.

Please read the news stories accessible via google news, yahoo news, and so on. There is much more to this story.
1. Vilsack has offered Sherrod a "new job".
2. He is only reconsidering offering her the old job she had.
Let's stop here. For some reason he doesn't know enough about her to offer her old job to her. So he still thinks Breitbart's sleazy story might have merit, OR he still thinks rehiring her to her old job might be bad PR. As I'll suggest below, it's probably PR he cares about. Either way, he's offering her a profound apology for something he still thinks he might have been right to do!
So my big question here to Mr. Vilsack: if you're so profoundly sorry, why don't you offer Sherrod her old job immediately?
3. My next point backs up TPM's advice that she kick those tires. What kind of job is Vilsack offering Sherrod, given that Vilsack isn't sure he can even offer her old job to her? Answer: I think we've just kicked 1 of this clunker's 4 old tires and I think we can already hear the air leaking out of it. "Hi Shirley! Got a nothing job for you! No need for us even to check your credentials! Interested?"
What about the media? Two points.
4. They picked up the story about Sherrod's "racist" comments and ran with it. Not only Fox. Fox, in fact, held off to check the facts. Many others did not. Shame.
5. And the media can't even get the facts right. Many outlets are still reporting that Vilsack has offered Sherrod her old job back. False.
Let's go on.
6. Part of the story TPM does not report. Sherrod got 3 phone calls from Vilsack's office asking her to resign. Three. The third came as she was on the road, due in her office in an hour. Not fast enough. Deputy Under Secretary Cheryl Cook asked her to say "do it, because you're going to be on 'Glenn Beck' tonight."
The real story is the cowardice of the Obama administration. Vilsack says there was no "pressure" from Obama. Shirley Sherrod says that in those 3 phone calls she was told that the White House wants her out. Which of them do you believe?
7. I didn't vote for Brietbart. Or the media. Or the NAACP. I voted for Obama. Because we did, he had the chance to become the most powerful man in the world -- the traditional description for the US Presidency. As we've frequently seen, he is not interested. As we see today, he's happy to kowtow to Glenn Beck.
I did not vote for this.

Ditto. She should get her job back, period. Anything less will be an attempt to appease both liberals and right-wingers, thus earning the respect of neither.
She was in a position of some power and authority and she should get it back, if she can, so she isn't replaced by a more politically safe nonentity.

Would she have a claim at the EEOC?
Take your retirement early Shirley Sherrod, and then some.
It is clear you are in a hostile environment.
Expose these new McCartyites

Go on the media circuit and make lots of money like Palin, exposing the hypocrisy of the Democratic party.
Surely, Shirley' story is about political correctness run amok.
