AIPAC Blasts Obama Administration ++ US Military Demanded Crackdown
MILITARY DEMANDED CRACKDOWN ON NETANYAHU
***
It's a standard AIPAC statement. Except this one is blasting the United States and not the Arabs. Not a word criticizing Israel, not a word supporting the President or the US government. It's an incredible document.
This is the lobbying position AIPAC will be selling to Congress. It will be urging super pro-AIPAC legislators like DCCC chair Chris Van Hollen, Anthony Wiener, Alan Grayson, Howard Berman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Steny Hoyer etc to sign on to this statement as they have always backed Israel in the past (see Gaza war). Same with Boxer, Schumer, and others who never deviate from he AIPAC line. Donors will be calling.
AIPAC statements on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict always describe a crisis and then explain how it was caused by the Muslims (Arabs, Palestinians, Turks, whatever) and then offers a remedy. The remedy: do whatever Israel wants.
Same here only this time AIPAC is dealing with the United States about a crisis instigated by Israel's attempt to stick it to the United States and demands that WE stop it. There is, as always, not a word of criticism of Israel. In other words, the United States can be wrong (I agree), is often wrong (I agree), should be criticized when wrong (I agree) but Israel is always right and may not be criticized (I disagree). EXCERPTS.
The Obama Administration's recent statements regarding the U.S. relationship with Israel are a matter of serious concern. AIPAC calls on the Administration to take immediate steps to defuse the tension with the Jewish State.
The Administration should make a conscious effort to move away from public demands and unilateral deadlines directed at Israel, with whom the United States shares basic, fundamental, and strategic interests.
We strongly urge the Administration to work closely and privately with our partner Israel, in a manner befitting strategic allies, to address any issues between the two governments.

The Biggsest newspaper in USA also Blast Obama Administration
the Obama Administration has endorsed "healthy relations" between Iran and Syria, mildly rebuked Syrian President Bashar Assad for accusing the U.S. of "colonialism," and publicly apologized to Moammar Gadhafi for treating him with less than appropriate deference after the Libyan called for "a jihad" against Switzerland.
When it comes to Israel, however, the Administration has no trouble rising to a high pitch of public indignation.

This is perfectly understandable when one remembers that AIPAC members and supporters consider than loyalty to Israel is more important that loyalty to the United States.

Seems like you are asking for loyalty to the Obama Administration and the Democratic Party, not the US Government. The usual "dual loyalty" racist canard is always played when those who support the State of Israel are opposed to wrong-headed and hypocritical whipping of Jews because our current US government wants to follow the PA line of making Palestine Jew-free. We, in America, stand for the freedom of political speech - Johann clearly does not understand that. Are those that despised Bush and his policies disloyal to America? Are you suggesting a loyalty oath? And how loyal are the PA to America - or do a large number of people in the PA and Gaza areas support the enemies of the US?

I second this point. At the end of the day, as much as we love our facts and rights, the loyalties may vary and differ amongst men and women. Instead of addressing the issue head on, we must work around it and see how far we can go ahead in peace.

AIPAC should have taken the opportunity to say something like Tom Friedman in the paper of record.
“Message from America to the Israeli government: Friends don’t let friends drive drunk. And right now, you’re driving drunk. You think you can embarrass your only true ally in the world, to satisfy some domestic political need, with no consequences? You have lost total contact with reality. Call us when you’re serious. We need to focus on building our country.”
Instead, AIPAC said "Let's have one for the road."

Well, there is plenty of US aid going to the PA and to Egypt. They NEVER do anything that is against the wishes of the President of the US - lol. Remember, if the Palestinians actually wanted peace, they would have gotten it years ago. Look at Gaza - Israel did what the US demanded of it and Hamas decided that it didn't want peace. What makes you think it would be different with the West Bank, let alone Jerusalem which is currently PART of Israel - NOT an occupied territory. Obama has said "It is not acceptable for Jerusalem to be separate from Israel - along the lines of the 1967 border - that is not going to be an option". I also note that Jerusalem, including East Jerusalem, was excluded from the US instituted freeze on natural settlement development. In her election campaign for President (and in her tenure as US Senator, Hillary Clinton proclaimed that Israel has a right to have an undivided Jerusalem as its capital. So, I'm for Obama's and Hillary's policy before they became against it and started bowing down to the PA.

Well, there's some truth to that. Friedman is an idiot and most of his predictions are garbage. Even here, his outrage seems to be in part over the fact that a US Vice President was dissed--Friedman tends to identify with the powerful and so an insult to the VP is an insult to him.
For once, his pathology puts Friedman on the right side of an issue.

"Israeli troll" - translated as "Jewish troll". Anyone who provides a counterbalance to your biased nonsense is a "troll" or an "Israeli" or some other "hateful" word. In the US, we have a tradition of free speech and open discussion. You evidently appreciate the extremist dictate of branding those who disagree with you with a nasty name. This is similar to the behavior of Ahmadinejad, who has similar positions to you on the Israeli issue. I presume you follow him wholesale on the issues of suppression of women (beating those who don't dress modestly) and murder of gays (hanging those who are found to be homosexual). Do you also agree with the government support of honor killings in Gaza?

I see that Eric Cantor has immediately jumped up and toed the AIPAC line.
No surprises there....
I guess if you want to find a patsy to hit over the head with the "what's more important, Israeli apartments in Jersualem or the lives of US soldiers?" then Eric Cantor's skull is as good a place as any to start.
Bring Petreaus back for some Congressional hearings, and then tell him that when he is to fire both barrels at Cantor.
Let's see how loyal to Israel Cantor is when the lives of US servicemen and women is put on the line.

"take immediate steps to defuse tensions..."
Quite stern language. Reminds me "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man"
Otherwise we can suffer dire consequences. As an Israeli observed "Arab have the oil, Israel has the matches". Israel can bomb something in Iran, just enough to prompt her leaders to close the Strait of Hormuz, pull strings to send both Iraq and hitherto quietest parts of Afghanistan in flames etc.
Just in case, all you guys, prepare plan B for commuting with 6 dollars a gallon gas.

piotr: "Israel can bomb something in Iran, just enough to prompt her leaders to close the Strait of Hormuz, pull strings to send both Iraq and hitherto quietest parts of Afghanistan in flames etc."
Oh, and you've ALSO sent that script to the Iranians, have you?
Your logic appears to be this: IF Israel bombs Iran "just a little bit" then the Iranians will cause "just enough trouble" to (and how lucky is this!) serve Israel's purpose.
But what happens if Israel bombs Iran "just a little bit", and in retaliation Iran fires 100,000 missiles at Tel Aviv at the same time as it sends 1,000,000 soldiers screaming into Iraq with instructions that read "don't stop until you reach Israel".
What happens then, piotr?

Regarding Petraeus and his presentation to the Joint Chiefs....
I'll point out that he is giving testimony to the Senate Arms Services Committee right this instant, and his prepared statement is here:
http://armed-services.senate.gov/statemnt/2010/03%20March/Petraeus%2003-16-10.pdf
And in it Petraeus states (blandly) the same thing that he stated (presumably, much more bluntly) in that presentation to Mullen.
In particular:
"The conflict foments anti-American sentiment, due to a perception of U.S. favoritism for Israel. Arab anger over the Palestinian question limits the strength and depth of U.S. partnerships with governments and peoples in the AOR and weakens the legitimacy of moderate regimes in the Arab world. Meanwhile, al-Qaeda and other militant groups exploit that anger to mobilize support."
Here's hoping that the committee members actually earn their keep by asking him to explain at legth on that statement.
Though I imagine if they do so they'll head behind closed doors before asking the General to kick back and let fly....
