BUILDING FOR ULTRA-ORTHODOX JEWS IN JERUSALEM:MORE TO COME
The announcement by Israeli Interior Minister that Israel is building 1600 more housing units in East Jerusalem made during VP Biden's visit was probably not an accident--hard to imagine otherwise. But, not simply because Eli Yishai, the Minister, wanted to embarrass the VP; also because he honestly has little interest in listening to any elected official--from his own Prime Minister to our nation's VP. That's because, as a leader of Shas, the ultra-Orthodox party, he answers to a higher power. And, the building is for his constituents: ultra-Orthodox Jews who, ironically are not Zionists and don't consider Israel a true state until the Messiah himself (it will be a him, in their mind; not a her for sure) lands on the holy ground himself.)
That's why Yishai will continue to build--and until he is stopped, Bibi will continue to support the building. He counts Shas as a critical core constituency of his coalition, as short sighted as it is. The ultra-Orthodox community in Israel is anti-democratic, anti-state (no matter who the leader is), and threatens Israel's security and modernity as much as any external threat, if not perhaps more.
The Shas party doesn't recognize the Reform Synagogue Movement as a legitimate form of Judaism; and, that means they don't recognize the majority of American Jews as Jews since that is what we are (over 50% of affiliated American Jews are Reform)....
Their ultra-Orthodox constituents rarely serve in the army, but their actions are sending tens of thousands of Israeli young people to serve an occupation that --still--the majority of Israelis oppose. Their young people don't attend public schools, don't learn English and don't learn Math and modern technology on the whole. Indeed, the growth of the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) sector in Jerusalem is as harmful to the divide in that city as the East-West divide there.
In reality, there are three Jerusalems: one is the small, but struggling secular Jewish community that wants to live in normalcy; they attend and support Israel's top university: Hebrew University, a thriviing cultural scene in spite of it all, and would like their own young people to have a future in Israel's capitol city. The second Jerusalem is the ultra-Orthodox Jerusalem, which has pulled the city under the poverty line, underminded public services and could likely not only erupt any future negotiations along with the settler population on the West Bank that hails from a nationalist religious background, but they will do it without every declaring loyalty to the state. Incredible~
The third sector, of course, are the Palestinian citizens of Jerusalem, disenfranchised from West Jerusalem and Israel's state and cut off from their natural partnership with the West Bank and Ramallah and Bethlehem due to the separation wall and all of the checkpoints.
In today's Hebrew paper, Yediot Achranot, the largest circulation paper in Israel, Ofer Petersburg published this helpful 'cheat sheet' of new building to come in Jerusalem as charted by Peace Now in Israel. Here is Petersburg reporting:
Yedioth Ahronoth (p. 4) by Ofer Petersburg -- Ramat Shlomo is not the only neighborhood [in which construction permits are liable to be the source of an international outcry]: An examination by Yedioth Ahronoth has found that no fewer than 19 other construction plans in East Jerusalem, in which a total of 7,038 housing units are to be built, are currently in the process of receiving authorization.
The various construction projects that are liable to become the next source of friction are all at different stages of the planning process. Some are at a very preliminary stage, after having been submitted to the Interior Ministry's Planning and Construction Committee, and are now being debated. Others are at a more advanced stage: an announcement has been made to the public about the planned construction, to allow for anyone who opposes the planned project to submit a petition. Still other construction projects are on the verge of receiving final approval.
Furthermore, there are no fewer than 2,193 housing units that have completed the necessary stages of approval, according to data that were provided by Peace Now. Construction on those housing units can begin immediately. Among these housing units are 1,083 new apartments in Ramot and other projects that have already solicited criticism of Israel, such as the project planned for the Shepherd Hotel.
"There is a tremendous shortage of housing units in the capital. Projects of this kind have to be approved, otherwise the city will stop," said a senior member of the Jerusalem District Planning and Construction Committee, which granted its approval to the Ramat Shlomo project this week. "We were stunned by the storm it raised. Everything is technical. We never regarded Ramat Shlomo as a place that is beyond the Green Line. This is a project that has been bouncing around the bureaucracy for seven years. We had no reason not to approve it. Nor are there any instructions in that vein, and that applies to every other neighborhood, either Jewish or Arab, in East Jerusalem.
Peace Now Secretary General Yariv Oppenheimer said: "It isn't a matter of timing, it's a matter of policy. The intention here is to turn Jerusalem into a bi-national city and to preempt a two-state solution. It was a miracle that only one project was approved during Biden's visit."

One thing about Israel, it appreciates the old aphorism, "When you got it, flaunt it." Embarrassing Biden was no accident. It was a message to the Israeli public that, as far as relationship with America is concerned, the dog still wags the walker. As for what it will mean to the American public, have you read American coverage? It's a non-event.

I doubt Biden was embarrassed--probably just steeled his resolve to shut things down with the aid packages and support..Soon it will be only Aipac sending $$$!
I have ask numerous times about the makeup of the people 'returning' to the new settlements! Was told it was second homes for rich American jews..Does anyone really know?

This interesting analysis suggests a possible new approach to me.
Instead of a "one-state solution" or a "two-state solution" maybe the most viable way forward might be a "four-state solution":
1. Israel (essentially within the borders of 1948-66)
2. Shas-land (in a small corner of the West Bank
3. Hamas-land (in a different small corner of the West Bank, and/or most or all of Gaza).
4. Palestine (the rest of the West Bank plus perhaps part of Gaza).
Come to think of it, wasn't this where Sharon was headed towards the end of his reign, at least in the strategic sense of wanting to divide and conquer the Palestinians while concentrating and isolating the pain-in-the-rear Israeli settler-kooks?
There is catch-22 stumbling block, however.
Absent a strong competent leader, such as Sharon, Israel will not herd the settler-nuts into any gestational Shasland without considerable outside pressure pushing them towards segrating off its lunatic fringe. However, the essential locus of such pressure, the US, is hamstrung because its Congress has become a defacto door mat for Shasland, even before such a lunatic fringe statelet exists for them to be deported to as traitors.

c9 is right PT! 'The Dog Barks, But the Caravan Moves On'.
That is because the US government is inept and stupid.
Netanyuhu and his sidekick, Barak, and even the lovely Livni, run rings around the 'most powerful nation on earth', every day, every week, 365 days a year. Obama is a puppet just as was the burning Bush.
They install their own men in the White House and oversee the composition of Congress and the Senate. Meanwhile 300 million Americans wonder how and why AIPAC controls their destiny.
And I wonder, every day, how on earth can a tiny state in the Middle East openly control Washington without any dissent from an electorate of 300 million.
It is the most extraordinary politic feat of all time.
March 12, 2010 3:28 AM | Reply | Permalink
BlueC, It is indeed an outrageous double tail wagging of dog (Israeli lunatic fringe's lockhold on Knesset PLUS AIPAC denying and covering-up that lockhold as part of its paranoia-based Israel-is-always-right-no-matter-what lockhold on the US Congress's Mideast policies). But there is nothing all that extraordinary or even stupidly inept about either of these two political hijackings.
Both are examples (of quite a number, e.g. think of NRA and gun laws in America) in which dedicated fanatical special interests bully a disinterested, timid and apathetic general public, their mainstream news outlets, and their elected representatives.
There is also no great mystery about how to solve such problems (think of environmental controls of the '70s, tax reform of '80s, or deficit reduction in the '90s): the general public needs a counterweight to push back against the special interests. That approach has failed in Israel thus far, because the special interest there has the national legislature of the world's superpower serving as its lap dog. So the public interest fight on behalf of both Israel and America (and the Palestinians too, for that matter) has to happen in America. That means groups such as J Street actually digging in for a long haul struggle to liberate American democracy, American interests, common sense and basic morality from AIPAC rather than giving lip service to such a struggle.

Isn't it nice, Dr. Bones, to come across a spot like this out in the wilds of WWWonderland? An oasis of Enlightenment, in which the discussants are attempting to position the Tel ’Avîv statelet--and Common Terror magazine and AIPAC and a’ that--in some broader perspective or Big Picture, instead of treating these (apparently) human events in the usual way, as a self-exceptional and self-indispensable neo-anomaly[1] ?
The bad news is that, though what they are doing is admirable, I cannot say that they do it too well. "PTroub" is especially vexing, who leaves everybody waiting for the other shoe to drop. I mean, HOW, exactly, is "the general public" to mine or harvest or manufacture or purchase "a counterweight to push back against the special interests"? The only plan actually in sight looks absurd: persuade China and Peru (& Co.) to intervene massively on Capitol Hill until The Lobby™ has been taught its place? You jest!
I guess I'd be for that if it were possible--but who can seriously believe it possible? [2]
Insofar as anything of the sort can actually happen, it is happening already: almost every apologist for Hyperzion has marked the United Nations down as rabidly inimical, which could, after all, be interpreted to mean that the human race at large has taken a stand on the neo-Levant. Unfortunately, advisory opinions from the Parliament of Man do not count for much, no matter how one interprets them. [3]
***
Then there is "bluecanary," who ought to stop hyperventilating at once. "[W] ithout any dissent from an electorate of 300 million" is not only grossly exaggerated, or maybe imperceptive, it is almost an offense against courtesy, TPM Café being a partially owned subsidiary of J Street.
If Mr. Rosenberg is no dissent, why then I must be Marie of Roumania.
Healthy days.
___
[1] One must recognize what one is up against, to be sure, the self-exceptionalisin’ shtyk is far indeed from being neo-. In the crude chronological sense at least.
In the Divine Legation of Moses of 1150-1154/1737-1741, for example, Bishop Warburton of Airstrip One announced that nothing in the history of Israël is to be adduced as exemplary of, by or for dhimmís. It was all "one stupendous Miracle," is the way Mr. Leslie Stephens paraphrased this thesis, after having caught His Grace in flagrante delicto, trying to make some analogy or another that was manifestly Warburtonianly incorrect.
Begorrah, Dr. Bones, and today is your lucky day!, because there exists a Googleswipe of the passage I started to quote from memory. (Stephens on Warburton is all the fun that Mark Twain on "Fenimore Cooper" only aspired to be. Enjoy, enjoy!) The words I specifically refer to are at line twenty of column 324a. But read the whole thing!
[2] To explain the impossibility would be tedious as well as digressive. What it boils down to crudely, though, is "What's in it for China and Peru?" This is why the "collective security" product has never yet worked right and probably never will. It sounded swell when first proposed, but by now we ought to have learned that when push comes to shove, Beijing and Lima will almost always decide there is no real crisis rather than be put to any significant trouble or expense.
[3] In the VERY long run, there may be a little something to it. Imagine if Turtle Bay required to be hasbaratised into compliance the same way Uncle Sam is now!
But imagining things that far off in the mists of futurity and potentiality is not political. Except possibly over on Team Jabotinsky, where pols and violence pros might reasonably--as raison d’état goes--resolve that they must always do their damnedest to make sure the United Nations stays powerless. If they haven't already.

To address one concrete complaint amidst your above torrent of obscuritania (further clouded by bizarre footnotes), John McC, google J Street and go to their website (or sample a few of MJ Rosenberg's prior mass of missives on TPM here). They are a beacon of common sense on this issue.
Moreover, there is nothing whatever obscure about my complaint against them: they are 99% talk and 1% action and that breakdown needs to be reversed.
J Street and likeminded sympathizers need to focus relentlessly on AIPAC and its many satellites and appendages, their documented anti-American deceits, demagoguery and malfesance, their long-standing utter defacto devotion to the most fanatical West Bank settler-terrorists, their aiders, abetters, apologists and fellow-travellers within America, especially other Jewish organizations and individuals in America, and above all on their most devoted cowardly slaves on Capitol Hill.

PTroub, I have a slightly different view.
J Street does not have to focus like a laser on AIPAC (which I call the 'American-style Imperialism Political Action Committee), but rather to incorporate its efforts, in solidarity, with the Global People's 'Anti-EMPIRE' Movement founded by Kevin Zeese, David Beito, and Ralph Nader.
AIPAC, like all 'Empire-thinking' groups in the US and globally is merely a supporting element of the ruling-elite Global corporate/financial/militarist EMPIRE --- which currently controls 'our' country, UK, Israel and several other advanced former nation-states by hiding behind the facade of its MULTI-PARTY sophisticated, Rel. 2.0 'Vichy' shams of faux democratic governments --- and the only thing that will be able to expose, confront, and ultimately excise this cancerous tumor of Global Empire is an informed, inspired, and solidified People's Global 'Anti-EMPIRE' Movement which attracts the vast majority average, honest, working-class, non-elite and anti-imperialist people world-wide who believe in 'democracy-thinking'.
The train is already moving. Many from the advanced former countries are already informed and getting on-board, while those from the territories oppressed by the Global Empire are joining because they fully understand the 'tip of the Empire's spear' in their face.
The math and the balance of people power is unarguable --- its now just a matter of understanding whether you choose "Empire-thinking" or "democracy-thinking".
Some would rather die than think (as Bertrand Russell said), but for the rest the tracks are now clear.
Time to get on-board.

Joann, you write: "...an occupation that --still--the majority of Israelis oppose."
Then why don't they oppose it more vociferously and more effectively?
Here, in the States, the average person feels like a drop in the bucket (imagine how a Chinese feels!)
But in Israel--Israel is almost a village--Bernie calls it a city state--even a small group of people can be heard loudly.
Any thoughts?

AIPAC was originally the American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs, and, a such, the Kennedy administration recommended that it be registered as an agent of a foreign power, i.e. Israel.
I see no reason why that should still not apply. And why the organization should not be proscribed by law.
In such an event, it could be made unlawful for any legislator or any person in Congress or the Senate or any person having any connection to those bodies to accept any gifts monetary or otherwise and to make any contravention a criminal offense.
After all, for an agent of a foreign state to have such influence over the US legislature cannot be termed democratic.

We've been over this before here BlueC. A complete non-starter and cop-out.
AIPAC is run by Americans (on behalf NOT of Israel but of the Settler-nuts tail that wags it). As Americans, AIPACers enjoy all the same First Amendment rights as the rest of us. Rather than trying to abridge their liberties, those who oppose them should make proper use of THEIR liberties:
Publicize the actual track record of AIPAC. Who funds them and why. What is their actual role in US politics (many documented but often forgotten cases of character assassination, political intimidation, etc.) Who really benefits from their activities (Hint: NOT the general public of Israel condemned as a result to endless war, violence and world-pariah status). Shame the Jews who go along with this insult to their heritage out of fear or laziness. Praise the few in Congress willing to stand up for what is decent, fair, sensible, and pro-American. Etc., Etc.
A final footnote: "AIPAC" could probably disappear as an organization without any great effect on the situation. It is the deeply ingrained Warsaw Ghetto mentality, the extensive web of trickery, the tradition of brainwashing, and the culture of lockstep thinking which AIPAC epitomizes that are at the crux of the problem, not the organization per se, or even the particularly powerful individuals behind it and revolving around it.
Yes, there are problems in and with Israel too. But the road to solving them runs largely in international efforts and effective international pressure, and that cannot happen with Congress standing like a stone wall for the settlers and their lobby, AIAPC.

SEE: Israeli MP blames gays for earthquakes, ABC News (Australia), 02/21/08
(EXCERPT) A Jewish ultra-Orthodox MP yesterday blamed homosexuals for a recent earthquake that struck Israel and the region.
Shas MP Shlomo Benizri, speaking at a parliamentary committee on the country’s preparedness for quakes, lashed out at homosexuality, considered an abomination under Jewish law and in its religious text, the Gemara.
“We are looking for earthly solutions, how to prevent them,” Mr Benizri said. “I have another way to prevent earthquakes. The Gemara says that one of the reasons earthquakes happen, which the Knesset (parliament) legitimises, is homosexuality.”
“God says you shake your genitals where you are not supposed to and I will shake my world in order to wake you up.”…

Mark is right, but he does not hit the deepness of the reason. I had a man come to my shul, prayed with us, and learned with us. He was invited to my house, sat at may table and partook of my food. He then, in front of my children, began to tell me how I was an Evil sinner for not believing in Jehosua ben Yosef as a savior. He had to be forcibly removed from my house (which I am sad to admit, I took great pleasure in doing).
He had the audacity to try to come back. As a 501C3, I cannot turn him away from my shul. I had to ask a neighbor to call the police, and later get a restraining order. I am not the only person this was pulled on, by different people. It sounds extreme, but this is the tactics used - subversion, subtrifuge, infiltration, and confrontation. That would certainly help me to monitor what the students are writing, and I think that it would make the experience more lattice-like for students because it would make it easier for them to monitor each other's postings
