How the Tea Party is Not Like the New Left
The glib Mr. Brooks, unable to see depredations on the right unless false equivalency alerts go off to put him in mind of depredations on the left, struck again. My response in today's NYT:

Re "The Wal-Mart Hippies" (column, March 5):
Superficially, David Brooks has a point about certain parallels between the New Left of 40 years ago and today's Tea Party. But the superficial resemblances disguise the deeper differences.
The New Left began as a just movement for civil rights, against arbitrary authority and against the abuse of national power abroad. Over the course of years, it evolved -- and in many cases devolved -- toward a mood of reckless, go-it-alone embattlement.
The Tea Party movement begins with atavistic delusions about the government and shows no signs of understanding, let alone addressing, the contemporary, out-of-control economy.
There were certainly paranoid strains in the New Left, but the Tea Party has yet to exhibit anything but misapprehensions.

Let's be honest here. TPM was a place for discussion but that was a while ago. Take a long hard look at the Cafe - it's dying, in numbers and especially in quality.

Funny, I've been a regular reader/commenter at the various incarnations of this site since 2002, and I don't recall this Golden Age at the TPM Cafe that you so fondly remember. The quality of the commentary here seems on the level of the best of the liberal sites.
Most people who comment in the lefty blogosphere are much better informed than other average Americans, but they are after all still average Americans, with lives apart from their interest in politics, and reliance on incomplete and often biased sources of information from which they form their opinions.
If the level of discussion is not up to your standards, you can either attempt to raise it or you can leave. I won't hold my breath waiting for you to do either.

As a career move, it is certainly beneath Todd Gitlin to write a letter-to-the-editor rebuttal to a David Brooks column and it should be criticized in a forum open to public comment. Your standards for activism are obviously lower than mine; nothing I can do about that. But I am entitled to my opinion and I will express it. And sometimes criticism of the Left is warranted, as even Gitlin's Wiki entry says:

10 or 15 years ago, maybe more, I observed that working class whites were leaving Los Angeles for the surrounding desert areas of Palmdale/Lancaster, Riverside/San Bernardino, etc. in order to escape from racial antagonisms, congestion, pollution, high home prices, etc. The move forced many of them to travel 3-4 a day to work and back...but they thought it was worth it.
The federal government, in response to demands of people like Gitlin and Rosenswine, then moved black welfare recipients from South Los Angeles into those outlying areas thus destroying the lives the whites had built for themselves.
Now you might agree with Gitlin that such actions were just. But I observe that Brentwood and Chevy Chase - areas where the Rosenswines and the Gitlins of this world normally live - are NEVER the recipients of such gifts.

Brooks argues that the Left's position is just as "atavistic" as the Right's - egalitarian longing has been around as long as elitism ("the meek shall inherit the earth")...and the basic assumptions about human nature of both Left and Right are utopian. I also noted that Gitlin very likely doesn't live the philosophy he advocates for others.
You confuse the observation of common prejudice with prejudice itself and find no contradiction in accusing me of anti-semitism for noting racism in white, Jewish liberals but seem quite happy when those same Jewish Liberals accuse Israelis of racism.

People usually have what is called a World View. In that World View, there is no ambiguity and so one can be assured that anxiety will not creep up on them when issues arise: the World View provides an answer for everything.

Found your communication dynamics very valuable. I'm currently teaching two introductory college classes. Each one has half the students using blogs, the other half using wiki's. So far, I think the wiki's are more helpful for the students. But I didn't know about the aggregator application. That would certainly help me to monitor what the students are writing, and I think that it would make the experience more lattice-like for students because it would make it easier for them to monitor each other's postings
