On Reading Newspapers on Kindle
I'm on my 4th Amazon kindle. (two broke and were instantly replaced. One is an upgrade).
I have been using the Kindle for all my book reading (except books not kindleized) and all my newspapers and magazines.
My wife doesn't have a Kindle so we still get the Post and Times delivered. I never look at them.
But, yesterday, I had to come to work, my wife was out, the papers were there, and I shlepped them to the office on the Metro.
And then the shocker. I can no longer read newspapers. I can't stand the way the stories jump around. You start on page i, go to p 8 to continue, and then forget you were on p 1 and go to p 9.
Ridiculous. Newspapers are especially hard for me because my New Yorker dad died before teaching me how to fold the newspaper for easy subway reading. (He didn't teach me to box either!)
But the kindle is so easy. All the stories are listed, one after another. You can skip stories but you can't miss stories. It's small. It's light. It's lovely in every way.
But what if I had to make a Sophie's Choice between my Kindle and my iPhone. Horrible thought. I'd go with the iPhone because, while I can easily read my Amazon books on my iPhone, I can't call my mom from my Kindle. Or watch my grandkids on youtube.
Other than the EZ pass, these two devices are the best breakthroughs of the century, this one and last.
I predict that neither one will, in any way, be surpassed in the next 90 years. Technology has gone as far as it will go.
JOKE ALERT: This last two tines above are take offs of a song in OKLAHOMA. Set in 1900 or so, the song goes: "Everything is up-to-date in Kansas City. They have taken it as far as they can go.
Second reference. In EL Doctorow's RAGTIME, someone refers to the murder of architect Stanford White as "the crime of the century." Another person says, "but it's only 1906."

I sort of liked newspapers in that you could browse a whole lot of stories at once, and that one story might leave you next to a good one with a bad headline, but I do agree that the disjointed reading was a nuisance.

I was with you until you said "Technology has gone as far as it will go". At the beginning of the twentieth century scientists believed that man knew all there was to know, but they could not explain where babies came from. On the agreement side: I'm on an extended trip in Mexico, bought a Kindle just before I left in mid-January, and love it. I've got over 50 books with me and get my New Yorker subscription on time every time.

It is truly sad when you have to draw peoples attention to the fact that one is being sarcastic or making joke.

Yup. Then one has to question whether the missed joke was due to your audience or your delivery.

I've heard that stand-ups in NY and much of the Northeast use a similar technique.
Sometimes, if they're on a roll and the show is going great, but then they try winging it but screw up and come up TOTALLY flat, they'll shout ROSENBERG!!
And the audience is supposed to cut them slack and basically erase that one real lame-ass attempt from the record.
I'd never imagined there'd be a columnist who'd shout ROSENBERG daily. It's exhausting just reading him.

RE: "I can no longer read newspapers. I can't stand the way the stories jump around." - M.J.
MY COMMENT: Yes, that has become a 'deal breaker' for me. I always hated it because fumbling with the pages made me feel like an über klutz (which I am). Print magazines are more manageable, but still somewhat annoying nonetheless.

Well, if your father read the New Yorker, no wonder he couldn't fold a newspaper.
[It's a joke, OK?]

Let the iPad/Kindle War Begin!
(Because God Knows the 25 years we have spent on Mac/PC War has been so productive)
knowing that I will hate myself later, the Kindle will need to step up it's specs big time and soon to not get slaughtered by the iPad. Who on Earth would buy an online subscription to SI, National Geographic, or People in black and white (no matter how readable) when you can get in color.
The Kindle may be the ideal device to read the NYT Top Ten Fiction list or the aptly named Grey Lady, but it kind of sucks when sharing Dr Seuss and Where the Wild Things Are with your kids or viewing the photos in Sky and Telescope.
The rumored price points for the iPad: $800-1000 plus mandatory contract left lots of room for a dedicated B&W Reader. But the actual price point of $499 Wifi only or $639 plus month to month $15 for the lowend 3G entry punches a big hole through Amazon's business model.
My brother has a Kindle and likes it a lot. Except he is a big fan of military history and can't make out battle maps in grey scale without the ability to scale up the size.
The Kindle may be great for boring policy geeks like me and M.J. but Art History and Astronomy or Biology people are going to laugh at 16 level grey scale eReaders. Amazon better move fast or find the Kindle in the same place as the IBM PC Junior with it's Chicklet keyboard. Don't remember the PC Jr? Hmm, there is a reason for that.
