Run, Harold, Run
Democrats have had a not-so-great year.
The health care reform bill is less than we hoped. The anti-Americans of the right have gotten stronger. The marriage equality movement has stumbled. Goldman Sachs and Bob Rubin make our economic policy. Teddy died.
We need a win. We need to smashmouth some rightwinger.
And now along comes anti-gay,anti-choice, neocon, Christianist Harold Ford to run in New York as Wall Street's candidate.
Come on, Chuck.Let him run. Sure, defeating a fake Democrat is not as much fun as trouncing a Republican. On the other hand, blue staters don't usually have the chance to beat Blue Dogs (and Ford is even to their right). He can be a stand-in for Lieberman and Stupak and the rest.
The other cool thing. Ford would put together a wonderful coalition: labor, gays, Jews, women,African Americans, Latinos and more all coming together to defeat
this symbol of everything reactionary, fake and shameless about politics.
Ford will run as a Democrat but he will lose in a landslide as the standard bearer for everything wrong with our political system.
Harold Ford will make us all fight for Gillibrand as if she was Bobby Kennedy. Good for us. Good for her. Bad for Prince Hal.
Run, Harold,Run. New York will make you long for Bob Corker,
I'm at MEDIA MATTERS ACTION NETWORK. Also I tweet as mjmediamatters.

I didn't know Gillibrand was known to be such a grand Democrat, really. Though Ford, jr. is a great Republican, really.

Some might ask
Run Harold run?
Is that a bumper sticker on the back of the car or on the front.

The more I think about it, the more I think Ford is just a cynical play to make Gillibrand look "left" and undercut the Union guy, who would likely be far more in tune with the left than Gillibrand. A run by Ford would totally undercut any oxygen he could possibly get in the media and siphon supporters reacting to the horror of Ford by making the "safe" choice.
Whoever is running the democratic party is a total dick.

Tasini is an unelectable cipher. His candidacy would hand the seat to any breathing Republican.

But a race between Tasini and Gillibrand takes her to the left and makes the debate about labor issues. A race between her and Ford allows her to tack right while still appearing left by relative comparison and makes the race about his shifting stance on abortion. Right in time for the EFCA battle. See? It's wedge politics versus a real debate that the status quo doesn't want to have. And to say any democrat would lose that seat to a republican is a serious long shot ... to the point of being absurd. That's why they call them "safe seats".
According to you, democrats can't primary to change the leftward party from within, and can't vote third party to change it from without. What? You think America is going to make themselves slaves to the democratic status quo because you guys are piss-scared of republicans? This independent has got to tell you: they don't mean the same thing to us they do to you. We've called the DLC's bluff before. We'll do it again. If you fear the next time will be worse than Bush ... think long and hard.

Mr. Rosenberg, you house is built on sand.
I voted for Pres. Clinton, was a union representative until I retired. Bobby Kennedy shook my grandfathers hand in front of our house in Venice Californis, I was very proud of my Democratic Party.
I find you comments to be crass, much like the behavior of Pres. Clinton and this is why I am no longer a Democrate.
People want stability in government. We don't have that with this Administration.

Progressives are always expected to apologize for not voting for Democrats who sabotage our agenda. Sorry, but those days are over.

Ford makes Gillibrand look like Bobby Kennedy... true enough but... this is what a primary race for Democrats looks like?

Question: What would Ford bring to the Senate that Gillibrand doesn't?
Answer: Sleaze.

Since Lieberman may lose his next Senate race, we need at least one Democrat to endorse Sarah Palin. And if Ford poops on enough liberals, he can earn the the title, "the Conscience of the Senate."

you succeeded in making me do a double-take with that headline
i still think caroline kennedy would have been a more progressive senator, and regret deeply the way that she was subjected to so much flak without the reasons for that flak being fully vetted
as it is, the Democrats will be VERY lucky to break even in the Senate in a year when, under other circumstances, gains which, even if small, could have been enormously beneficial could have been made. And given how many blue noses there are in the House, the likely losses will hurt greatly

Wow. Just wow. Mr. Rosenberg - why do you harbor such nasty aggression toward an African American Democrat?
Isn't it enough to just say you think Ford is too far to the right for New York and that Gillibrand is the better candidate? Why do you want to smash him in the mouth because his religion and views are different than yours? He's a member of your party.
Back in 2006 during Ford's run against Corker, practically anything Republicans said about Ford was portrayed here at TPM as "code" for racism.

If Corker or any of his supporters had said anything at all like what you've just posted I shudder to think what TPM would have said.

Bull Conner was in our party. And Lester Maddox. Plus George Wallace, Strom Thurman, Jefferson Davis, and God Help Us John C Calhoun who was a Democratic VP to Pres Jackson.
I am a Yellow Dog Democrat but we have to draw a line. "Card carrying member of the Democratic Party" isn't a "Get out of Jail Card" for the self-named and mostly self appointed "Democratic Leadership Council" Al Frum, Will Marshall, Joe Lieberman, and Harold Ford don't speak for me, and I don't give a shit about the date on their party registration.

Ford isn't a real "Christianist". He's a man who will believe whatever will bring him money or power. Many or most politicians are like this, but Ford does an even poorer than usual job concealing his inner emptiness.

cynical, but has the ring of truth to it

From here in the Sonoran Desert, Ford would fit in quite nicely as either a "confused" Conservative or a "regressive" Moderate. As such, he is an overly ambition has-been wanting to do more for his financial backers.
And further, here in Arizona, a conservative federal judge, would be a boon to Ford, given that this judge has issued a preliminary proposal in which the Clean Elections Law, discriminates against the wealthy and to the point that the lobbyists will again be permitted to finance Republican political campaigns to their heart's content.
And that's how Senator Jon Kyl got his start with the Chamber of Commerce. Obviously, this is the "road map" that Ford intends on following for success.

Harold Ford Jr. is a blue dog, DLC guy. This isn't suprising news.
He outflanked little Bobby Corker and came very close to winning a seat in the US senate. If he had won unlike Corker who will never vote for HCR I believe Ford would have finally voted yes.
I still don't think he will run because he has an easier job(s) now than he would if he went back into congress.
