Netanyahu Meets With Settlers And Tells Them Freeze Is A Fraud
I love this Netanyahu statement published on the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
It is six paragraphs long and fewer than 20 words are underscored. Those underlined words refer to Netanyahu's nominal, perfunctory and utterly unserious commitment to a settlement freeze followed by negotiations. But these are the words the Israelis want you to read, just not the rest.
The rest is a big fat promise to the settlers that the freeze will be for nine months only and, when it ends, they will be able to build anywhere.
Here is the money quote: "This [freeze] order is one-time only and it limits the duration of the suspension. There are nine months and three weeks left. Once the suspension has expired, we will continue to build. I want to make it clear." In other words, I had to promise a freeze to President Obama but, don't worry, I'm not serious."
It reminds me of that 1975 New York Daily News headline after President Ford vetoed an aid package that would have saved New York from bankruptcy? It read: FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD.
A similar headline today would read: BIBI TO US TAXPAYERS: DROP DEAD.

I do agree with all the ideas you have presented in your post. They’re very convincing and will definitely work. Still, the posts are very short for starters. Could you please extend them a bit from next time? Thanks for the post.by healthy families and child health plus

MJ: Maybe Netanyahu really just believes in the One-State solution. Well, maybe not "believes," but his tricks are going to bring it about.

Even when it doesn't matter much, it is clear that Rosenberg is a liar. Netanyahu does NOT claim, as Rosenberg says he claims, that the freeze will be fore nine months only rather than the 10 months that Netanyahu promised. And Rosenberg pulls this sort of crap all the time. To his devoted, Israel hating followers: you can't trust ANYTHING that Rosenberg says to be true. In this case, Rosenberg claims that Netanyahu told the settlers that "I lied to President Obama and the freeze will only be nine months." But that isn't, apparently, what was said. Why does ROsenberg claim that it was? I don't know.
Given that Netanyahu apparently did not tell the settlers the freeze was only nine months rather than ten....could he have been saying anything else? Perhaps something like "Don't worry: I said ten months, and I meant it. Ten months for the Pals to to take advantage of what would be a step forward for them, and to really start to negotiate. And then we'd have a problem. But don't worry. They won't do that. Because they really aren't interested in negotiating. And once the 10 months have elapsed and there is no hint of an interest in negotiating we'll no longer bound to the freeze."
I don't know if that is what he meant. But it certainly makes more sense than Rosenberg's version. Given how the Pals have approached such things in the past, it sure makes more sense than the rosenberg lies.

MJ quotes the article correctly. Perhaps AIPAC brainwashing has affected your reading ability?

Would you tell Mr. Bayer there are no such people as the "Pals." They are Palestinians. Calling them "Pals" is like saying, calling the Israelis "Izzs."
Significance. If you call an entire people by a diminunative, you also likely misunderstand their views.
I guess when people have sucked on the Zionist crack pipe long enough bigotry almost seems respectable. (Where is John Huston when you need him....)

the obama administration is carrying water for netanyahu. the US wanted the quartet to issue a statement of support for the "freeze" and also to affirm "the Jewish identity of the State of Israel, and that the future border between Israel and the Palestinians would reflect developments on the ground." looks like the US is acting as israel's lawyer again. [LINK] russia objected to the language and the joint statement was not issued.
meanwhile, non-profit organizations in the US are funding groups in israel to give money to IDF soldiers who refuse evacuation orders.
...offered every soldier refusing to evacuate a settlement, and the Kfir Brigade soldiers who publicly demonstrated their opposition to evacuation, NIS 1,000 for every day they spend in military prison, is a registered non-profit organization and has a license to operate. The group receives donations from a U.S. based group that are tax exempt. [LINK]
the settlers are rejecting netanyahu's "freeze" and there is concern about IDF discipline. instead of using the IDF to enforce the "freeze", the police is being used instead to carry out the orders. the settlers obey their god and not netanyahu.
netanyahu is afraid of the settlers reactions and will cave and give assurances that he really doesn't mean it. all the while he will be doing political kabuki theatre on the world stage. the US applauds but the europeans and the russians boo.

BluePearl: "looks like the US is acting as israel's lawyer again. [LINK] russia objected to the language and the joint statement was not issued."
Indeed true. If you remove the "affirmation" that Russia (rightly) objected to you are left with a statement of support that actually reflects long-standing US policy, and not Likud policy.
The "affirmation" that the USA wanted inserted into the communique amounts to the USA claiming to be "an honest broker" even as it is acting as "Israel's shill".

Actually, ptroub, Rosenberg says:
The rest is a big fat promise to the settlers that the freeze will be for nine months only and, when it ends, they will be able to build anywhere."
I stand by my comment
As to Mr. Buster, you are correct. There are no people called "the Pals". But p rior to the ceding of land by Jordan and Egypt after June 1967, there was no Palestinian people either. Certainly no Arab state recognized such a people. Certainly neither Jordan nor Egypt did. You may not like it, but thems the facts, sir. btw...never have sucked on a zionist crack pipe., Never even owned or saw one.
But who knows, perhaps within the next 9 months and three weeks, might actually be negotiations and a settlement. I'm not holding my breath, but I would be delighted.

Whether due to AIPAC fouling, or settler-terrorist propaganda flooding, or whatever other affliction, your poor brain and moral compass seem to be badly befuddled, BB.
The foreign ministry (NOT MJ Rosenberg) quotes Netanyahu as saying:
"Once the suspension has expired, we will continue to build."
It stretches the definition of "liar" beyond all reasonable bounds to say that rounding 9 3/4 months of suspension down to 9 instead of up to 10 makes one a "liar."
The key issue here is that settlements themselves, or least many of them, serve no useful purpose whatever for anyone except the terrorists (Jewish and Arab) and their supppliers, but Netanyahu is kowtowing to those fanatics because craven politicians and brainwashed dupes in the US refuse to stand up and denounce this American-sanctioned terrorism-coddling. All the international community have been asking for is a curtailment on letting the settlers commit NEW land theft. No major official in the civilized world is talking yet about doing what SHARON, of all people, REALIZED the necessity of, and forcing the settler-kooks to actually move off off other people's land ALREADY seized.

Wouldn't it be nice to see Hamas or Fatah/PA implement even a 9 month cessation on incitement, kids ty shows glorifying murder, lies about the history (like entirely ignoring the 1947 UN partition), etc.

I might be nicer if the Zionist colonists would engage in a 9-month cessation of ACTUAL violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.
Instead the Colonists feed their children a steady stream of racist lies. The biggest: God gave them the West Bank. (I've talked to God about this. He says they are liars. You know, if I write that down and wait 3,000 years someone will worship that writing.)
Until supporters of Israel mature enough to accept the fact that the Zionist Enterprise is a profoundly bigoted and racist enterprise, they will never evolve into a peaceful nation.
Maybe a "nation of all its citizens."
So if you want to save the Palestinians, save the Israelis--from themselves. Israeli primitivism is a threat to everyone.

I think Bibi is trying to preempt the obvious ploy that I think we all see coming: "Just one month more". Over and over again. Bibi seems to be saying that he'd better see some good response from the Arab side before he'd go along with an extension beyond the first ten months.
I do think Bibi will permit an extension if there is some good response from Abbas. But Bibi seems pretty sure that nothing will happen. This is reasonable, as Abbas simply isn't in a position to make a deal or even negotiate much.
This could be a pretty good way for Bibi to get something from Abbas in return. Also, the settler groups in the mean time may be mollified and quiet, which helps Bibi.
Otherwise, normal construction restarts on October 1st, 2010. Look to see if the PA schedules elections around that time; It would be a good way to get a free extension. But it would also be a good time for the Israeli government to influence the election...

The obvious thing for Bibi Netanyahu to have said about the freeze (half a freeze, maybe it's a chill?) was that "I'm doing it for peace". But instead he said he was doing it for the Americans. Clearly this raised the opportunity for Sullivan and Rosenberg to say that Bibi was being cynical.
So I don't think the primary audience was made up of pundits. The audience is Obama. And maybe Congress.
