Levin and the War Tax
Last week I related a fable about War, Taxes and the City State of Florence, the point of which is that when you start taxing the rich for the wars, the wars happen less often. Carl Levin gets behind the idea today.
Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said higher-income Americans should be taxed to pay for additional troops sent to Afghanistan and that NATO should provide half of the new soldiers.
I can't wait for Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck to start a 9/12 Protest about the War Tax on their multi-million dollar paychecks.

While we're at it, how about a war profits tax?

The senator does have a wry sense of humor.

If only the tax would pay for the $trillions already spent. Needs to be strong here.

A new tax on those making over 200K/year would be an even more serious threat to the American Homeland than putting terrorists on trial. It would be more socialist than health care reform.
Budget conscience fiscal conservative deficit hawk Republicans and conservative Democrat Blue dogs would particularly see this as a Red Flag to filibuster until Levin cries 'Uncle'.
Wars cannot be paid for by taxes, only by taxcuts, particulary taxcuts for the wealthy, as we should be thankful they love American and choose to make money here.

I don't see a justification for this beyond "I don't like war or rich people". Am I missing something here? Can someone at least make the case for this?

The justification is obvious provided one sees clearly what Senator Levin is up to.
He is not trying to put his Uncle Sam's invasions and occupations on a financially responsible basis -- that is only the flimsiest of cover stories.
What is really going on, I take it, is that Sen. Levin figures that if our own TopPercenters had to supply a reasonable share of the bucks, and the Old Euros a reasonable share of the IED-fodder, why, probably they would manage to see to it that the Kiddie Krusader Show gets canceled _pronto_.
the Senator is not, I assume, seriously trying to make that happen, only to embarrass the belligerent classes a little. And he won't achieve even that, for the B. C. gentry and neogentry are thoroughly brazen and shameless and unembarrassable.
Mr. Levin well knows how brazen they are, so what it comes to is him bringing the badness of the bad guys to the good guys’ attention. And that is always a good thing. (Is it not?) A thing that never requires any special justification.

Agreed, there is no justification to raise taxes when you can just add war costs to the national credit card, CHARGE IT!

I think stopping the wars is the better procedure even though the point made in the post is well taken.
