Holy, Holy, Holy
Harvey Cox, Mary Gordon, and Cornell West.
For those of you who think you've heard the last of God, listen to these three at the Boston Public Library, interviewed by the indispensable Chris Lydon, and broadcast on his Open Source webcast.

That's quite a spirited discussion of the flying spaghetti monster you found there.

Cornell West is just too much. nearly every sentence starts out as Rochester and ends as Camille Paglia.
"The Blues ain't nothin' but a way-down-low shout out loud lament...in the guise of a Dionysian eros narrative."
SNL should do a Cornell sketch.
I have to say that his mind bending notions of Jesus on the cross crying out to the God who seemed not to be there - does that explain why the Rapture Novels are popular? That's about as esoteric as it gets - and it's hard to see that selling lots of paperbacks at the airport.
My impression of much of the popularitiy of Christian rapture nonsense is a kind of "putting on heirs" - it's an excuse for ordinary people to insert themselves into a tableaux that includes Moses, Jesus and maybe George Washington.
Sort of like the phenomenon where Christians visit Israel and decide that God is talking to them and wants them to be Elijah II or Moses II.
To me it seems the "communities of faith" part is where the real action is. This is where real political and culturual power comes, because it's embedded in the way people are conducting their real lives - not in fantasizing a pipe dream universe where they play a pivotal role - or in Cornell West's right brain riffing on theological paradoxes.
BTW, Bernhard - finally got to your story on Palestine entrepreneurs in the October Harpers. Great read. Evokes an all too forgotten notion that the absence of war (or occupation) means not just bad things not happening, but good things - (like people setting their hands to useful labor instead of stewing in their own impotent rage) FINALLY happening once again.
